Ken Gargett Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 this has come from an idea that the thread on consistency in the same box of cigars, or not, raised. on one trip to havana i asked why we couldn't get boxes of cigars done by their best rollers - a bit like getting special bottlings of wine from certain winemakers etc etc - but the idea was shot down. thought that perhaps if there was a push from serious consumers like those in this forum that they may think more about it. the idea would basically be that we can access a box of say robustos by xxx or pyramides by zzz. havana knows only too well who their top rollers are and i see no reason why it couldn't be done in small quantities. anyone see any major hurdles? anyone be interested if rob could get them to do it? all that said, i wouldn't hold my breath on our chances.
cvm4 Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 I guess you could go to cigar rollings by Morales, Hamlet, etc. and get them to roll you 25 cigars? Or are you talking about them rolling for a specific brand and vitola? Same filler, binder, wrapper, etc?
Ken Gargett Posted June 21, 2005 Author Posted June 21, 2005 would always recommned to anyone visiting to try and grab what they can from those guys but i was thinking something more formal and possibly regular (almost like something in addition to the limited edition range, though from necessity, quite small). have them properly boxed and labelled and for sale, though the reality is that they would go to a few top retailers. doubt it could be done under a specific brand - perhaps even a new line such Roller's Reserve? the rollers could even pick the vitola they prefer. might be only a 100 or two boxes but just as people seek out the LE's, so too would they seek out these. probably all too difficult but a nice thought.
Tampa1257 Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 I have been fortunate to have been able to smoke a few Salomones that were rolled by Hamlet and La China, both rollers were true Masters of their craft and the cigars were heavenly. I would be very interested in acquiring additional special rolled cigars from either of these Master rollers, no matter the size.
shrink Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 Given the willingness of people to buy EL's, and cigars like the Partagas D4 Reserva, I am certain that "Roller's Reserve" would sell. My only concern would be price.
Ken Gargett Posted June 21, 2005 Author Posted June 21, 2005 yes, if they ever took off, there is no way known that they wouldn't be high ticket items but it would be great to have a few for special occasions.
Ken Gargett Posted June 21, 2005 Author Posted June 21, 2005 tampa, it was a bunch of cigars rolled by hamlet that got me started on all this. i still have one salamone of his in the 'dor for something special and a few robustos. came back with a bucket of his robustos and stupidly went through them like bushfire but they were so good. the last few remaining are hands off.
Mel Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 Ken if you were a marketing specialist for Habanos S.A. you would make them way to much money. I like the idea but they would cost like the Part. SD4 Reservas... out the ass. Would the flavor be any different?
Ken Gargett Posted June 21, 2005 Author Posted June 21, 2005 mel, i once suggested in an article that i couldn't understand why someone had not made a rose wine and called it 'lily the pink' and advertised it to the song. immediately got a call from a winery wondering if i would mind if they did (not that i had any rights to it). go for your life, i suggested. they did. they are no longer in existence - there endeth my marketing career. no doubt they would be exy and no point if not the flavour and/or quality to justify it but on the assumption that the top guys do make a difference, worth a shot. and it isn't as though this would expose the rest of the rollers as the top guys would presumably only do a little of this. the first lady tells me that you are enjoying the partagas d4s.
Well Armed Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 This is an excellent idea. It would be like the rollers had their own brands. Sounds expensive.
gehrig24 Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 expensive indeed but I too think it is an outstanding idea. It would certainly be nice to put them away for the special occasions as Ken mentioned. I think it would be nice to have the roller autograph the box.
Mel Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 Yeh Buddy I like the sd4 Reserva. Only had two. It's not like these things grow on trees-well they sort of do but not like they are free. As to the cost of "special cigars" I have heard people ask me if they are worth the extra cost. This must be a highly personal and subjective answer. Some believe that any more than 3.00USD makes a cigar "high". I mean does a 20.00 stick taste twice as good as a 10.00? These cigars being talked about here would be of a better quality and class but some of the value would be in their collectabilty and pleasure in ownership. I'm sure some smoke to enjoy and others can enjoy without smoking. I can do both but eventually they all must die the death of fire.
Ken Gargett Posted June 23, 2005 Author Posted June 23, 2005 it is the same old argument as with wine. is a $20 bottle twice as good as a $10 one and where does that leave the $100 bottle ($1000 bottle?)? as good as cohibas are, is there a component of the price that can be attributed to the status' factor? how many wines include a similar component and also rareness, desirability, history etc. good as grange is, no doubt the price is so high because of the demand and not purely the quality (and the demand is driven by the status and perceived rarity etc etc - not that i would ever refuse one). hence, if this ever did get off the ground, expect to pay accordingly.
skindiver Posted June 27, 2005 Posted June 27, 2005 The trick is to bring more of those special cigars back with you, Ken! My girl's Dad gave me some plastic wrap that he said doesn't show up on x-ray.I don't believe that for a second, but I did manage to get 50 Hamlet salomones by duanes on the way out! Another trip netted an additional 50. His Robustos are tops as well!
Ken Gargett Posted June 30, 2005 Author Posted June 30, 2005 stan, it was over a couple of hamlet's specials that we met. sitting on just one of the salamones and down to last few of the robustos but went through a heap of them. they were sensational.
studio253 Posted July 2, 2005 Posted July 2, 2005 This sounds like a great Ken...it would be really sweet if this could get done....
dragon Posted July 2, 2005 Posted July 2, 2005 Figure me in Ken.......I'll take 2 dozen Gran Piramides, 2 dozen Diademas, 2 dozen Double Robustos, 2 dozen Salomones, 2 dozen Laguito #2s, 2 dozen Gran Coronas, and 2 dozen Robusto 'A' size please. So how soon can you ship?? These are $6.00 each, right?? :-P
