I wasn't aware the the term "Pub" was short for "Public House". Effectively a locale you could go to when you wanted some company and didn't want to be alone in your house.

Came across this great vid :cigar:

In 1943, the American OWI helped create a film that they showed to all those who were to be stationed in Great Britain. This is an excerpt from the US Military Training film "How to Behave in Britain." Burgess Meredith, of later fame as the Penguin in the Batman series (he did a great deal of other stuff as well and much of it quite good), takes the American GI through the ins and outs of the British pub as it existed in wartime Britain.

There are a few different terms like "public house", "free house" "inns" and "ale house" here in the UK. (Trust us to make things complicated!)

Haven’t seen this video in years. Traveling like I do for work I have always found this approach to work better than “I’m here and I’m the man!“

Those guys usually don’t last to long. 🤣

One of my faves is the Angel Inn in Andover. Construction started in 1444, pre-dating our country by over 400 years which blew my mind. 😆

Cheers!

Well a lot of pubs are closing these days. And a lot have been gentrified and turned into restaurant/pub.

Here's an old famous one (my pic)...

I went to the Prospect of Whitby in Wapping one time over a decade ago. Had one of the best pints I've ever had. Never found it again, and judging by the amount of Spritz' cocktails and such, it doesn't look like I'll ever have it again. Especially loved the story of the low tides hanging reminded by the noose on the back facing the river. Doubt that's there anymore either.
