El Presidente Posted February 17 Posted February 17 This series to explore whether a particular cigar is humidor worthy. Cost these days is an issue for many so let's see if we can highlight some absolute standouts. This should particularly assist those new to the cigar world. To be fair, most of the cigars we have featured to date have scored exceptionally well. Surprisingly well! Scoring is: 1-3 (Poor) 4-6 (Average to good) 7-10 (very good to excellent) Use the Poll. You are more than free to comment away! I was asked yesterday about my favourite winter cigars. Now winter locally is not quite Calgary At best, I might have to reach for a pullover/jacket three - four weeks a year....at night...maybe To me, a winter cigar must be constructed flawlessly, flavour rich and be able to be smoked comfortably in under 45 minutes. They don't have to be immensely complex but they need to have a clearly defined personality. Cuba has a plethora of half and petit corona that can fill the brief. Nothing fills it better than the Trinidad Reyes ....except for that annoying aspect of price....it is pretty much perfect. We have developed the MOFOH Sovereign Sun to produce a cigar that is 80% as good for 30% of the price..... but the king is still the king! Trinidad Reyes ....Let's kick off the discussion 3
Popular Post NYGuido Posted February 17 Popular Post Posted February 17 I absolutely love the Reyes but absolutely abhor its price. I was able to pick up 2 boxes at a price of $18 per cigar, which is lunacy in hindsight. But they are delicious. Honeyed hay, cream, a touch of sweetness. Just the perfect coffee companion. BUT, then I tasted the Sovereign Suns. Literally my first draw of my first SS smoked ROTT, my brain said "Oooh! A Reyes!" I will keep smoking the Reyes I have, but there is a very low likelihood I will continue buying them consistently unless (a) the price drops considerably; or (b) the SS stops being so darn consistently good. Does the SS "beat" the Reyes? Ugh, I hate thinking that way because it pits two things I love against each other. I agree with @El Presidentethat the SS is at least 80% there in terms of flavor. I will absolutely smoke the Reyes when I want the "Hi-Fi" version of that flavor on a particular day and time, but 95/100 times, I'm picking the SS and loving it just as much. If I never had the Reyes before, I'd be totally content with the SS, which is a testament to how good the SS blend is (and I can't wait to see how they age). I will give this to the Reyes, though: it is bang on consistent. Never had a bad one. Never had a plugged one. Knock on wood, they've been solid. And I do love them. 8
Popular Post Lucas Buck Posted February 17 Popular Post Posted February 17 Top marks down the line. My love for Reyes runs deep. Funny thing is I rationed them for years due to cost ever since they were introduced. Silly, silly me. Yet I will still buy them at current prices because they’re so good. My favorite Trinidad and probably in my top ten cigars overall. 9
Popular Post Ford2112 Posted February 18 Popular Post Posted February 18 😓 How I miss them. How I will continue to miss them. They are a great small smoke. Partagas Shorts, HUHC, Sovereign Suns and RG Perlas all are suitable as well on their own merit. Habanos is smoking crack I swear. 5
loose_axle Posted February 18 Posted February 18 Nice enough but way too exxy and I'd take RG Perlas and SCDLH El Principes over them every day of the week. 4
Popular Post JohnS Posted February 18 Popular Post Posted February 18 I like them a lot but maybe not enough to replace my current inventory when it runs out, given the price of Trinidad these days. 5
Goldeneye Posted February 18 Posted February 18 Absolutely love this cigar, but unfortunately I think I have enjoyed my last one and as I have none left and will not likely ever buy again. The price just isn't anywhere worth it anymore. I have replaced the Reyes with Sovereign Suns and AF Short Story, both of which I also think are great cigars. I do miss this little bugger, though. 3
Popular Post Nevrknow Posted February 20 Popular Post Posted February 20 My first box hit me like my first Cohiba Medio Siglo. Right out of the gate I was like, "damn, THIS is my new short cigar" (especially for winter). I didn't think about it at the time, but I have since realized all of my cigars seem to fit in 1 of 2 categories; the flavor I'm looking for or the time slot I have, (ok 3 categories...BOTH OPTIONS), wanting a cigar but only have an hour? No Lusi or Siglo VI for me! Needless to say I went deeeeeep on these. While not my absolute favorite Trinidad (Esmeralda pay attention here sweetheart, you're my true love ) They absolutely are in my rotation while on the road when I'm "homeless" in my truck on the road (He knows who he is ) and it's too cold to use the hotel Gazebo. Coming up on 7 years for my oldest boxes and enjoying everyone of them. But (there's always a but...) after reading others' opinions, I may have to try a Sovereign Sun. 5 1
NYGuido Posted March 7 Posted March 7 I just got my Aussie friend into these and he’s wondering what the AUS price currently is in country. @El Presidenteand @JohnS, any info would be helpful because the only things he’s seeing suggest it’s like AUS 60 each. That seems wrong. 1
JohnS Posted March 7 Posted March 7 Unfortunately, that is around the mark that they are in Australia currently. It equates to $US42 a stick, after currency conversion. 1
