The Cuban Trinidad Robusto Extra Returns: General Trinidad Poll and Weekend discussion

Trinidads planned revival has had mixed outcomes. Since the London relaunch of the brand last year, sales have ticked up at the top end...from a very low base...but it appears nothing can save the Reyes/Coloniales/Media Luna. No matter how much they try, Trinidad does not carry the cache/swagger of Cohiba in key markets.

Will this one be a success?  

"The cigar retails for £66.10 (about $88.70), £758.80 (about $1,018) for a box of 12. For some perspective, the Robusto Extra retailed for £24.60 (about $33) in 2010, a few years before it was discontinued"

Let's kick the subject of Trinidad  around this weekend

It's true. Habanos S.A. has not been able to emulate the perception of luxury that Dunhill and Davidoff had prior to the 90s, but it certainly hasn't been through lack of trying, that's for sure!

In regard to the Trinidad Robustos Extra, I believe it will be a success, but the Trinidad marca overall needs to reset its pricing if the sales of Coloniales, Reyes and Media Luna are to rebound. It's as simple as that!

The pricing is the problem. Trinidads themselves, especially when aged (even or perhaps even especially in the small vitolas) are just wonderful.  

I find Cohiba needs much more age to develop comparable complexity and full enjoyment, …but what do I know? (Just personal experiences.)

I love Trinidad. Back when the Fundy was the only cigar in the marca I bought and smoked them almost as much as my beloved CoLa. Although I have not smoked all the newer vitolas I have smoked all the older ones including the ELs. Yet to smoke one I didn’t love and can only say that about three other marcas, Cohiba, ERDM & Sancho Panza. The original run of Robustos Extra are one of my favorite cigars and probably my favorite Trini all time (maybe a tie with the Fundadores). Hope the reintroduction is as good. I won’t be buying many at that price, but should a decent price appear, I will try a few if I can get my hands on them. Will be so sad if the Reyes and Coloniales are cut. Truly magnificent cigars.

When I first heard of the incoming price increases, I made sure to buy another box of some things I really enjoy, Coloniales were on that list. Such a great cigar, especially when a cab was 250-300 bucks. Now you just see them sit at 700. (and that's on the cheap end!)

Trinidad has never really had the cache of Cohiba imo. It was just a brand that seasoned cigar folks knew to be really really good for about half the price of Cohiba. Almost like an insider secret.  As soon as HSA tried to raise prices to capitalize on this the secret was out and the 'insider knowledge' went with it.

As for the Robusto Extras; I've never had the OR but I have heard REALLY good things. I would absolutely jump at the opportunity to try one of those. The re-release will likely be a really solid cigar as well but the shiny new box and extra two bands are just off putting to me. Couple that with the new pricing scheme and my desire to try one is about zero. Give me a typical golden hinged wooden box and honestly my interest would be more.

I would really like to hear from the people who think Trinidad carries the same caché as Cohiba. Maybe there are some regions where that’s true - it certainly isn’t here.

I'm just going to say it...I hope this new launch fails. The Coloniales is one of my favorite Coronas. I have a few sitting in my humidor, and would love a new box, but the price doesn't justify their worth. I hate that Trinidad has been turned into a luxury brand and would love to see the marca come back to the enthusiast.

Like others have mentioned, I too hope the launch fails and it they're forced to abandon this new marketing strategy for Trini.

I scored a box. I’ll let them rest for a while then burn one. I’m hopeful they’re as good as the initial release, which I smoked through rapidly. I’ll post my thoughts here afterwards.

I voted no on everything except the Fundies over Cohibas. Those Fundadores are all class. Trinidad is a great marque,but not nearly worth the pricing. Neither is Cohiba for that matter.
