LONDON — Britain and the European Union agreed a new defense and security pact Monday, as part of a wide-ranging “reset” of relations between London and Brussels after years of Brexit bad blood.

In a sweeping deal on the day of a major summit in London, the two capitals also agreed to extend generous fishing rights for EU fleets in British waters for another 12 years, until 2038.

That marked a big concession on the U.K. side after intense lobbying from France, and prompted immediate scrutiny back home for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer....................

HHMM he most definitely does give a S..... I think he's the highest paid MP earning 900k from second jobs. Those second jobs have been won precisely because of the endless torrent of hate that he pumps into the social discourse. Regarding his pension from the the EU, yep.... not like Farage to be hopelessly corrupt in his messaging. He could tell Brussel's to keep their dirty Euros. Hell would freeze over first.

I have no idea why it is so difficult for any party to understand that if you don't control your border, voters will get pissed off and you will be looking at government from the other side of the chamber.

Granted, it's a long standing all encompassing flavour that has been rammed down our throats for decades, but it's not the foreigners eroding the middle class and making everything shite. It's piss poor wealth distribution that's the problem, but the owners of papers etc wouldn't want to print about that would they? So foreigners, easy targets, no voice, easy pickings.

Poor immigration policy is a reality and feeds into  poor housing policy, health policy, education policy. 

The worst thing about democratic elections is that you can only kick out one government at a time.

Aren't all of the above caused by low taxes?

Look at the top rate if tax in America and other countries during their golden years, you got a big pat on the back to say well done, you really do win at capitalism, then they took 70-80% of your money and put it back into the country to pay for stuff.

As an entrepreneur, I am happy to work until Tuesday lunchtime for the government (taxes). Rest of Tuesday arvo -Friday is mine. 

If I had to work until Thursday for the government, then I wouldn't be taking any risks. I would move offshore to a friendlier tax locale or hop on the government tit with everyone else.

The premise of Brexit never really made much sense given priorities in Britain and now they’re just trying to make the best of a bad situation. 

Rob is absolutely correct on the importance of a stable polity, although that’s only really true if you want to have a social welfare system, which most countries do. And I think that the EU’s basic setup didn’t compromise that initially. The EU’s problems began with its eastward expansion when many Europeans in the west weren’t prepared to welcome them. It’s why the idea of Turkey joining was always stillborn. Germany post-unification probably should’ve been the canary in that coal mine.

Non European migrant policy is a whole other ball of wax.

We're resource -wealthy and our Government's false sense of moral superiority has put our economy and that of emerging markets into the toilet. I understand wanting to diversify, but not until a viable option is already in place. In the last 10 years we've changed 2 words in the national anthem (that no one wanted) and weed is legal while tobacco is still evil.  

Arrogance doesn't defend borders - even with a please and thank you.

Everyone always says this but there's a price to pay to live a good life. We have a lot of people whining on social media about moving abroad because of the taxes but you'd have to buy their ticket and kick them on the plane as they've been saying it for a long time and aren't showing any signs of going just yet.

I've got a small business that does okay and employs people, been lucky in the odd investment or two, it would be easy to move somewhere with less tax, but I really enjoy where I live. I pay a load in taxes but I still have enough left to provide a decent life for my family. There are a lot of people hoarding vast amounts of money and not paying their fair share, I'm not taking about us mere mortals, but families that have maintained wealth through the centuries or others that have been incredibly successful like Buffet, Gates, Bezos etc, they've won capitalism, they can afford to give more back.

The funny thing is, is that it all goes back to Russia. 

The Tory party at the time delayed delayed until they through gritted teeth finally allowed a Russia investigation, about influence on the Brexit vote. The only hitch was the Tories requested MI5 specifically avoid looking for any Russian influence,  in……the…..investigation???…..into……EEeerrr…….Russian influence. It was effectively an empty folder.

Boris Johnson, Dominic Cummings, Nigel Farage, Arron Banks etc etc all have deep links to Russia. 

This is the deeply embarrassing moment when the independent scrutiny committee announce there has been a cover up. 

Brexit never made sense, because it was based on a mountain of lies, designed to carve the UK away from...and in turn weaken Europe/NATO.

The government doesn't spend money well enough for me to pay more tax 

I pay pretty much the right amount to meet that risk/return equilibrium.  I wouldn't pay any more and would certainly explore offshoring/ banking if govt became tax rabid. 

You need to be careful when you tax the crap out of the "founders" class as they cease to exist. Buffets Berkshire Hathaway’s $26.8 billion tax bill for 2024 was happily paid. How much more do you want?  Tax consumption. Tax generational inheritance. Tax capital gain. 

From memory the USA has 7 companies with a market cap over $1 Trillion. EU has zero. Look at/compare, every relevant figure regarding venture capita/entrepreneurship and the EU has seriously underperformed over the past 25 years.  Some exceptional EU legacy companies ...but unicorns in the past 25 years are hardly prolific.  There are plenty of reasons why.... including tax rates. Don't kill the golden goose.

While much of the post 2016 Russia stuff bordered on hysteria, their large scale interference in a very tight referendum on a generational decision that will reverberate for decades isn’t making a mountain out of a molehill. It just isn’t. You can debate how influential it was, but it can’t just be trivialized.

However, at this point it’s water under the bridge, and luckily more voters have gotten wise to their games since then. These days that’s all we can do fight it, beyond making social media companies more accountable for the social harms they cause.
