Oscar Wilde-like descriptive. I enjoyed it. I saw a video somewhere where a guy got slit on the leg by one of these spurs. Hit an artery.

Cheers that this is about rooster fighting. I always have to wonder in these woke times...

What a fantastic read.

Cuba is magic, but in a land where the people are denied so much, where they have so little beyond music and dancing and their amazing love of life, it seems churlish to criticize from afar.

^This all day.

Brilliant writing Ken. Thanks for the post Rob.

What a way with words! I brought memories of when I was in Cuba in 2002 as times seemed different then compared to today!

Reading aussie is always interesting. The over use of slang is becoming its own language. "I'm heading to the servo" Wtf is a servo??? "Chooks" is not as ubiquitous as aussies might think. Also, do yall use "football" universally for both sports or do you usually use soccer to differentiate?

servo is the service station or petrol station or petrol garage, if that happens.

interestingly, the editor made pretty much only one change - went through and turned all references of chooks to birds or chickens. he obviously missed one or two.

football or footy is aussie rules and rugby league and rugby union. very rarely soccer. we correctly call that soccer. it does get confusing with the two codes of rugby. americans and others very rarely get these right. for us, shorthand is often rugby for rugby union and league for rugby league. we would never call rugby league rugby.

does that help?

Linguistically interesting that us English speakers have our own language but can switch up to talk to each other when needed. I would have never guessed a "servo" was a gas station. As a New Englander I'd bet most Americans on this site would know that when I say I'm going to the "package store", which means I'm going to get beer/wine. I've heard people talk in England that I could only understand 80% as well. English slang is wild.

i would have been guessing for hours about a package store. not heard that one. i would have assumed a store to buy packages to put stuff in. veery weird.

when i was with the law firm in DC, every Friday morning tea, we had a ten minute session where i had to explain Aussie (and sometime English) slang and sayings. it was very good fun for all of us as the reactions were priceless. i remember that things like goons, cobber, bludgers, kark it, yobbos, chuck a wobbly, stone the crows, budgie smugglers, bogans and so many more were perhaps not as well understood as they are today.
