hangten Posted January 10 Posted January 10 So Marco Rubio will be the new US Secretary of State. Do we see things getting stricter with incoming CCs to the US? Especially with his stance on Cuba?

Apples vs. Oranges FYI

OFAC works closely with the Department of State and other federal agencies to align sanctions with broader foreign policy and national security objectives. 1
chris12381 Posted January 10 Posted January 10 I'd keep an eye on Mauricio Claver-Carone. During the first administration, he was tapped to be on Trump's transition team managing sanctions for US Treasury, then Senior Advisor for International affairs at Treasury. In 2018, he was appointed Senior Director of Western Hemisphere Affairs at the National Security Council. Most people credit him with developing the "maximum pressure" strategy and policies applied to Cuba and Venezuela during Trump's first term. Well, he's coming back as the State Department’s Special Envoy for Latin America. Fun fact: While in law school, Claver-Carone was attacked and got into a fistfight with Cuban diplomats while he was protesting the return of Elián González in front of the then Cuban Interests Section in DC. Those Cuban diplomats were charged criminally and expelled from the US. 2
El Presidente Posted January 10 Posted January 10 It is going to be a fascinating period. There may yet be a major chink in the Cuba wall. I honestly don't believe they can survive 4 more years. 2
Chas.Alpha Posted January 10 Posted January 10 I think President Xi will insure that they do, especially since Vlad can’t afford to cover their backs anymore. 1

They need to look in the mirror more often, before casting blame for all their woes against the USA. That broken record has been played for far too long. 5
BrightonCorgi Posted January 11 Posted January 11 An aggressive stance towards Cuba seems logical considering the overtures made by Trump concerning the rest of NASA. His public recognition of China's influence in the region and a willingness to combat it. Not sure how they'll address these issues but can kicking is unlikely. 1
Duxnutz Posted January 11 Posted January 11 Given the events of the last week, maybe they’ll try to annex Cuba. 3
VeguerosMAN Posted January 11 Posted January 11 CCs have always been available in the US via online retailers. I don't think that will change. What's changed is the price hike with CCs.

JY0 Posted January 14 Posted January 14 WASHINGTON — Retiring President Biden is lifting Cuba’s designation as a state sponsor of terrorismless than a week before leaving office — outraging Republican members of Congress who believe more stringent sanctions should remain in effect. Biden’s decision to ease restrictions on the longtime Communist-run island was first reported by The Associated Press and the White House did not immediately make public its justification.
