Hello everyone, I'm new here. Today I wanted to light an Opus X. It's aged 3 years and it was ok, or maybe it has been aged too long? I've seen this cigar a lot in movies and TV series such as 'The Gentlemen Club' and 'The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.'

Welcome! This is something I've actually been thinking about trying recently. After all these years, I've still never had one. Curious to hear what other folks on here think of this in terms of strength and flavor.

Thank you. It has lost a lot of flavour.

Welcome!  How do you know it’s lost flavor if this is your first one?  3 years isn’t very old.  None of the very few I’ve had were very strong, so maybe they aren’t.

I tried one more later, and it was the same.

I have opus that have aged 10 years and they are sublime and full of flavor.

You and me both, my fellow brother. Very enjoyable cigars.

They're ok, not complex at all. I've had many over the last 15 years but have never been blown away (wish I did ) It's just hard to get as they are limited which draws people to them. Love everything about them from the looks to the label top notch.

Have not had any or have any in the last year. All Marketing…

I am running out but I have some 10+ years and think they can easily get to 20 and have life in them. Way too strong off the shelf in my opinion.

Welcome to the board!

Opus are an acquired taste especially for regular Cuban smokers. I tend to believe they are good cigars off the shelf but only get great and develop a good nuance and complexity after five years. My least favorite of the lines so far has been the Don Alejandro and the 20th Edition which both seem very muddy especially for Dominican tobacco. That being said, my favorite Fuentes are the Rosado, Casa Cuba, and the Xtra Anejo. Also the Don Carlos is a fantastic blend.

I think with a lot of Opus offerings the vitola matters. You may was to try an 8-8-8 or similarly thinner ring gauges. Lanceros are impossible to find in the format but there are smaller cigars that smoke very well from the Opus Catalog.

Cheers and good luck, I hope future attempts find themselves fruitful.

I've had a Robusto Extra which was excellent, stronger than I like but tasty and complex. Not a top 5 cigar for me though I have to say. I have a 2020 Lost City resting for a special occasion, excited to try that one and the story behind them is very intriguing.

I've had a few (20th anniversary, N°5...) and I enjoyed them. The profile has always been gingerbread, gingerbread and more gingerbread to me.

Can't say I'm a huge fan, I'd smoke one once or twice a year but at the end of the day I find them a bit boring.

I couldn't have said it better myself (fwiw).

3 years is fine, they grow to be more complex after that. How was it stored?

Maybe you had a dud because they don’t lose flavor that fast (if anything they’re best at 5 year mark) and they tend to be full of flavour. I would give it another shot and if you don’t like it, then maybe it’s not for you

I'm smoking a 6 year old Fuente Fuente, which is their corona gorda, right now. I apparently bought it for $14.50 at the time. I think these are closer to $20 now.

Anyway, it has plenty of typical Opus X flavors. It is smooth leather, earth, pepper flavor but no sting, and a nice musty floral sweetness through the nose. I love the aroma, too.

I think the marketing is only part of the story. Nostalgia plays a roll, as well, for those of us whom smoked mostly NC for most of our cigar smoking life. These and Padron thousand series are cigars I will likely always have in my humidor. They aren't very good young but, with age, they are very good and the flavors and aroma are nostalgic like comfort food. Mom's meatloaf isn't "better" than A5 Japanese wagyu ribeye but, it hits the right buttons everytime leaving you completely satisfied but not blown away.
