Unfortunately, our forum doesn't appreciate uploads in Apple's HEIC format. Personally, the images of these wines is worth the trouble of converting and re-uploading them.

How was the 2010 Palmer and the Raveneau?

I drank a 2010 Pichon Baron and 2010 Leoville Poyferrr a couple weeks ago, side by side. Both drinking great.

I love Chablis and have never had the chance to try the Raveneau. But drank a J Moreau Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot last night and loved it.

Wow.  Nice lineup.  A couple of questions.  No rush.

  1. What can one expect from a Chateau d'Yquem Sauternes vs a "regular" Sauternes of the same vintage? If you were to quantify it,it is a 25% increase in "enjoyment"?  Or 200% and over? 
  2. Similar question on the Mouton Rothschild.  They're pricey bottles.  Are they typically a mind blowing experience regardless of vintage? Or would they be subject to the same peaks and valleys of similar reds typically consumed by the great unwashed masses?  :)  In short, for the aforementioned wines, is there real "bang for the buck" that would make the experience, worth the cost? And to clarify, the retail cost. Not on secondary markets.   I've taken risks on older cigars and it has paid off 90% of the time. I'm less inclined to do so with wines though.

My most expensive bottle was a 2003 Chateau Brane-Cantenac Margaux.  IIRC it cost me around 125Euro back in 2005/6.  We opened it around 2012. I do recall the moment I pulled the cork loose the aroma was incredible.  Crushed berry aromas poured out.  I recall it being an excellent wine that was worth the indulgence.  If I were to quantify it. It was probably twice as enjoyable as the $40 bottles of Amarones I regularly enjoy.

What do you mean by "a few decent wines"'? LOL I wish I could partake of those.

Ken, the humour of the phrase, 'a rather pleasant lunch' is not lost on me. I mean, to begin with, you've consumed a 1998 bottle of Krug and 2008 bottle of Louis Roederer Cristal here. Incredible! 😮

palmer was good but the best of that bracket was the old Wynns.

the Raveneau was one of the wines of the day. spectacular. probably second to the Krug. i remember when Raveneau was so cheap. but Moreau is a pretty good substitute.

not just Krug, John, Clos du Mesnil. happens far too rarely. amazing stuff. by chance, Clemence Krug, daughter of Olivier, was in town that very day and they had a Krug dinner for a select few. i was not selected, but probably just as well as after the lunch, i may not have been in peak form. even so, i doubt they had anything that matched that 98. 

and as you know, i am a massive fan of 08 champagnes and few are as good as the Cristal.
