LizardGizmo Posted October 14, 2023 Posted October 14, 2023 Alex Lifeson's late 70s work in RUSH is some of his best. A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures are all excellent and incorporate 6 and 12 string acoustic as well as electric guitar. David Gilmour's 70s work in Pink Floyd is probably a bit more obvious, but Animals is under-appreciated given the success of DSOTM and WYWH. More modern favorites include Porcupine Tree's In Absentia & Deadwing, Meshuggah's Nothing & Obzen (8 String low tuning metal masters), Tedeschi Trucks Band. 3

canadianbeaver Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 I am a huge Eric Clapton fan. Been saying so for years and the albums posted so far here are right on. But a new guitar player has found my phone so just going to drop this here. 3 1

The guitar work in Animals is insanely good. While almost everyone knows the Floyd, Gilmour flies under the radar in many circles. A great player, touch & tone outstanding, and always seems to play just the right amount of notes. To me, Waters never got the musical side of his solo stuff anywhere near the quality of the collaboration with Gilmour. 5
Under Pressure Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 Lots of great suggestions here! Would also be remiss to omit Mark Knopfler. Lindsey Buckingham also flies under the radar. For a new-ish talent, check out Billy Strings. Yes, somewhat corny name and he is firmly rooted in bluegrass, but he is one of those talents that can effortlessly and masterfully transcend genres. Check out some of his live shows on YT where he does excellent covers of many classic rock tunes. 3
mbflash80 Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 This is a very tough one for me...so many great great ones...I grew up on 80s metal and so the guys I always tried to play like are the Van Halens, Rhoads, Lynches, Malmsteens (simply try in the case of Yngwie...no one can really sound like him) etc of the world. Each of those guys and many more have put out jaw dropping stuff...but as a metal player I think my favorite all time guitarist is Jake E Lee. He's criminally underrated and perhaps in a sea of sameness really stands out with his unique phrasing and crazy chordal acrobatics...Bark at The Moon has so many cool guitar candy moments even if the songs are not on par with the first two Ozzy albums...but The Ultimate Sin is the album where Jake basically just said "F it" and played his ass off with no inhibition (at least it seemed that way to me). I also love his playing on the two Badlands albums though they are a bit more bluesy..anyhow...just some appreciation for a guy who probably doesn't get anywhere near what he deserves... 2

Great shout out to Jake. He had to fight an uphill battle replacing Randy. Most Ozzy fans were not ready to accept a new guitarist after him regardless. His brief work with Ozzy was every bit as unique as Randy's. His crunchy tone was refreshing and modern sounding. Badlands was awesome too. Despite the jerk of a singer. (in brief. Great vocalist but knowingly had sex with many groupies while infected with AIDS.) 1
Ford2112 Posted October 17, 2023 Posted October 17, 2023 Glad to see some Jake E. Lee love! One of my favorites. I'm gonna dig out Badlands and play it LOUD tomorrow in the truck! 1
WallyWaldo Posted October 17, 2023 Posted October 17, 2023 One of my favourite solos. Peter Green is a strong contender aswell https://youtu.be/RtmW2ek7WkQ?si=Y56gXT5zfMLBGczd 1
HuffnPuffff Posted November 1, 2023 Posted November 1, 2023 Lots of great albums and players mentioned so far. For me Back In Black or one of the AC/DC live albums is 5* guitar porn. Currently listening to Nita Strauss’s Controlled Chaos instrumental album and loving that. She was in the cover band Iron Maidens and then joined Alice Cooper. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Namisgr11 Posted November 1, 2023 Posted November 1, 2023 But I wouldn't quibble with any Hendrix fan that prefers Are You Experienced? 3
Namisgr11 Posted November 1, 2023 Posted November 1, 2023 My all time favorite on acoustic guitar is Doc Watson. 1
ctsigler317 Posted November 1, 2023 Posted November 1, 2023 I've got to go with two: 1) Eric Clapton - Unplugged (1992) 2) Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction (1987) 1
