Corylax18 Posted April 30, 2023 Posted April 30, 2023 The timing doesn't make much sense and couldn't be much worse, but I guess its a step forward? This proposal looks like it could reduce the cost of a "new" vehicle in Havana from 250ish% of retail down to 150-60sih% percent of retail. I really don't know how OFAC thinks they are going to keep these vehicles out of the hands of "The Regime" though. I'm aware of very few truly private citizens that would have the money, or desire to spend the money on a new car, even with this slightly reduced price. "Companies" run by the family members of very high ranking Government and Military officials definitely will. Maybe PEMEX and other similar foreign companies can update their fleets. But they already had the newest and best maintained vehicles on the island. I don't know who thinks this is going to help anything in Cuba right now or why they would think that, but I guess a hollow gesture is better than nothing at all? https://havanatimes.org/news/us-authorizes-vehicle-sales-to-private-enterprises-in-cuba/ 1
SCgarman Posted April 30, 2023 Posted April 30, 2023 I would suppose the regime would have access to all the gasoline/ diesel they need for themselves. For the common folk a different story altogether.

What I got out of it is that if I ever need a lobbyist in the US, I am going to use the one that represented Apacargo Express 1
Fuzz Posted May 1, 2023 Posted May 1, 2023 What an innovative way to import gas/diesel into Cuba, one car tank at a time.... 1 1

Even things that generate money for the regime aren't getting delivered. Obviously if Venezuela is having trouble providing it that would certainly explain a lot. This embargo is such a joke. GM and Ford can sell their goods in Cuba but we plebs can't. I think the OFAC members need to be looked at for bribery. 1

No petrol necessary. Oh yeah, forgot about the power grid there being powered by ships with generators burning dirty fuel. 1
JohnS Posted May 16, 2023 Posted May 16, 2023 An interesting article from Cigar Aficionado today... United States Authorizes U.S. Auto Sales In Cuba New cars made in the United States could soon be cruising the streets of Havana More than 60 years after the embargo effectively halted the export of U.S. cars to Cuba, new American-made models may soon re-appear on the streets of Havana, following recent authorizations by the Treasury and Commerce departments. Earlier this month, the Treasury department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) granted a license to a Florida-based company named Fuego Enterprises to sell new and used U.S. automobiles to entrepreneurs and businesses in Cuba’s emerging private sector. “Fuego Enterprises Inc. has been authorized to import to Cuba vehicles of different brands and sizes, originating directly from the United States,” the company reported last week. The statement, signed by Fuego’s CEO and president, Hugo Cancio, noted that the cars would include hybrids and gas combustion models, and be manufactured between 2018 and 2023 by auto-makers such as GM, Ford, Chevrolet and Tesla. The company’s web news platform, OnCuba, reported that 30 applications for cars were already being processed. It quoted Cancio as stating that the vehicles would benefit the private sector and facilitate “the improvement and expansion of their business management by owning this type of transportation.” Full Article: https://www.cigaraficionado.com/article/united-states-authorizes-u-s-auto-sales-in-cuba
targa88 Posted May 16, 2023 Posted May 16, 2023 Interesting notion... Given that they can't afford gas or electricity (reference Tesla) for that matter...who will benefit from this "lifting" of the embargo...
