Popular Post Ken Gargett Posted September 19, 2022 Popular Post Posted September 19, 2022 caught up with some of the troops yesterday. we had a bit of a port tasting and then lunch. i did not take photos of the lunch wines (the ports may have blurred the camera???). all the 63s stood up brilliantly. especially surprised by how good the sandemans was. the two 70s were brilliant and they rather overwhelmed the 77 taylors. the 77 warres a touch corked sadly. both 77s, dows and fonseca, were special, but the dows stood up as perhaps best on the day. the 94s were still pups but glorious. the aussie was a bit of fun at the finish. the lunch wines included - egly ouriet pierre peters les chetillons 2010 (wonderful) a couple of 22 clare rieslings (we had a couple of clare winemakers present - the o'leary walker watervale blows me away and so cheap). they are raving over 22 as even better than 21. trio of old hunter sems which drank brilliantly - tyrrells vat 1, 94 and 98, and the 05 chatto. a couple of greek wines, chartron corton charlemagne 2016 solengo 1997 quite possibly others. 6
Chas.Alpha Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 I love a great Port! @Ken Gargett, suggestions for recent vintages that should be acquired?
Ken Gargett Posted September 19, 2022 Author Posted September 19, 2022 2016, 2017, 2018 all fabulous, though i have seen far fewer of the 18s. all three great reputations. 16s reminiscent of 77s, 17s of 11. not so sure about the 18s.
MossybackR Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 Sheesh!! That’s some wonderful vintages, @Ken Gargett
helix Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 How long is a bottle of port good for after being openned ? What kind of storage ?

Expand old vintage ports, i would not be leaving them around long. younger ones, you could recork and put into the fridge for a day or two, or perhaps a little more but better finishing at the sitting if you can. 1
BrightonCorgi Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 Some great ones there. 1970 is considered the single best vintage of the 20th century by many. The older the Sandeman; the better. The '94 Noval must've been a beast. The Seely era of Noval has produced some fantastic stuff. Even their single and 2nd vintage brands are awesome.

Expand both the 94s were. agree re noval these days (although they were never bad), although try as i might, i simply don't get the 16. 70 has always reminded if 88 champagnes. under the radar largely on release but over the years have just continued to show how good the really are. still remember articles wondering whether 70 or 75 would be the better vintage. could never follow that. mind you, i have an article somewhere that debated whether 77 or 78 would be the better vintage. seems crazy now. 1

Expand 1980's really poor for Noval and Nacional. Not too great for Sandeman, Cockburn, or Croft either.
