anacostiakat Posted June 27, 2022 Posted June 27, 2022 There has been indications that Pope Alexander VI (1492 Borgia Pope) smoked cigars. Not sure of the background but it was included in the tv series.

So that's only 11 years after the European discovery of the Americas. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Alexander_VI Keep in mind that cigars as we know them now are not how tobacco was originally smoked. According to Wikipedia the Spanish introduced tobacco to Europe in 1528. The first cigar factory was established in Cuba in 1542. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cigar 2
Fuzz Posted June 27, 2022 Posted June 27, 2022 Would not the members of Columbus' expedition be the first European historical figures to smoke cigars? Rodrigo de Jerez and Luis de Torres were noted as being observed smoking tobacco on the journey back to Europe, and de Jerez is typically credited as the first European to smoke tobacco.

Expand I think the modern cigar, with wrapper, binder, filler, and 100% tobacco was a European innovation. I could be wrong but weren't the native/indigenous cigars without the tabacco wrapper we have today, they were just bundles of leaves wrapped with string or in a tube, etc. 1

Expand Less not forget that Rodrigo de Jerez was convicted of being possessed by the devil, for only the devil could give the power to man to breath smoke, and put in jail for a time. To think, it only took us 5 centuries to come full circle too. 8

Where upon he was ratted out to the Inquisition and imprisoned for 7 years. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose 3
