Trinidad La Trova LCDH JUL 2021 (MRSCW#3)

Admittedly, I like every single Trinidad currently available and I have been lucky to score some Esmeraldas, Media Lunas and Vigias last year, together with this La Trova, but this is my first one to try and I really looking forward to it. I don’t know what to expect as I haven’t read any reviews, but it seems to be a real forum favorite when people mention it. I would think it has to be medium bodied & smooth but with good amounts of flavor.

The La Trova is a La Casa del Habano Exclusivo exclusive release, measuring 52 x 166mm (6½″) commonly known as a Double Robusto. It does feel like quite a big cigar in size, but it is fairly light in weight which is odd. I wonder if it’s going to be like Vigias, extremely smooth draws, almost non-cubanesque.

The wrapper is beautiful, aromas of fresh spices and floral elements. To the touch, the cigar feels very smooth like a Siglo VI but soft like a Vigia. I am very keen to try the draw on this one so I twist off the pigtail and it’s a like a trick that works every time – the draw is perfect through that little tiny hole. I will cut it though, firstly because I have had a few terrible tar/poison-experiences with Vigias, secondly, I want to look at how packed it is. After cutting, the cold draw has aromas of fresh spices to it, very much like the impression I had from the wrapper.

The pairing of the night is an excellent wine and I plan to treat myself to a couple of glasses now that I have sent in my weight to the Fat Bastard competition already.

From the first taste, I am thrown into a world of baking spice, freshness and floral goodness. There is also some coffee with saltiness to it. The most surprising aspect of it, is how smooth and mild it is. In fact, this is to me a perfect example of a mild-light bodied cigar that is full flavored. Later it might get bolder, but thinking of how Esmeraldas and Vigias develop… I doubt it. For those who are into earth/leather/dark fruits sorry you won’t find it here. The main underlying flavor is of a rich but soft, French white bread. The ash is incredible and stays on without falling off for what I imagine, as long as I want it to. Excellent construction.

At the halfway point, I can’t help but to get a feeling that this cigar is aged 10 years. It’s just that smooth and rich. I wonder if they are using some particular leaves from the tobacco plant that are extremely mild and flavorful at the same time? As the cigar develops, I am very pleased when the middle parts bring new flavors into the mix: the French bread spine now has a new revived taste of almonds to it, the kind of concentrated flavor you get from almond milk. Combine that with more coffee and it sounds like a B&B breakfast. 

The final third brings a new player into the game, and I reassess my first saltiness description and decide to name it salty green olives instead. In fact, forget everything I said, I want to call this La Trova flavor profile as close as you can get to an Italian Focaccia with green olives. If you had one, well this is it.

Because the draw is so good and it is light, I smoke this one in a little bit more than one hour only. Normally, I find Trinidad to smoke faster than other cigars, maybe it’s the excellent draw, which to me is not always a good thing, because I do expect a cigar of this size to last least 1,5 hours if not longer and I try to avoid getting any nicotine buzz. No issues here though. I could have smoked one more right after and not felt high. Speaking of high, the other night I had a R&J LE DC (that I also wrote a review on) that sent me spinning to the moon – both by how good it was, but also how strong it was.

Well, reaching the end of this magnificent cigar, I would say it’s a 92-93 points cigar any day of the week. I even dare to say it’s a good lunch smoke, despite its size. Not a hard edge to be seen, smooth and beautiful to smoke now and they definitely do not need any time down. If I try to make a silly comparison, perhaps the best way to imagine this cigar is to combine a Vigia with an Esmeralda in a Topes wrapper with the classiness of a Siglo VI.

Nice review.

The Trova & Fundy blends have gotten softer & softer over time, IMO. I always finish both wanting for more complexity & power.

I’ve only had one, but it was very much like this. Very good quality construction and leaf, quite mild. Still interesting and pleasurable.

Maybe it’s the box I have , but the Trova are not light for me. Full flavour and super smooth.
I have several other boxes so I will check on them when I crack them.

I prefer regular Churchill and mag 46.
Mind you I really like the Esmeralda

Wow, well, both of those are much stronger than the La Trova. After an Esmeralda the La Trova tastes like straight air to me... maybe you got a rich batch.

You must have got some flat ones
I would however agree that the Esmeralda are stronger than la Trova. I just would never call them airy
