MrBirdman Posted February 3, 2022 Posted February 3, 2022 I wonder if @Grateful13 still thinks these people are “Neurotic hypochondriacs with 100% psychosomatic “illnesses”.” 2
Cairo Posted February 3, 2022 Posted February 3, 2022 The article did not mention that some other US embassies in other countries had experienced this as well--here is an article about Vienna: https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/vienna-is-the-new-havana-syndrome-hotspot It looks like a lot more work needs to be done to figure out what is happening. 4
Cairo Posted February 6, 2022 Posted February 6, 2022 I have been reading more about this--and there is a lot of speculation and secrecy surrounding it. US embassies in Havana, Vienna, Bogota, Hanoi, Berlin, "Other European countries", "Russia", "China" were affected. https://www.dw.com/en/mysterious-havana-syndrome-in-us-embassies-what-do-we-know/a-59493509 The most plausible explanation I have heard is that it is the combination of foreign espionage "listening" technology and US counter-espionage "anti-listening" technology that has interacted in weird ways. The reason I am convinced it is the combination is because of the secrecy surrounding the subject. It looks like the US .gov does not want to share the details of their "anti-listening" technology and does not want to abandon it. 1

My cyber security self tends to agree with your explanation for some time now. Just a side effect of an adversaries listening technology. Could be a homegrown tech by US too. I don't think they're beaming a signal solely just to hurt people.

As I alluded to on the last thread on this issue, a direct attack of this nature makes little sense unless its purpose is to divert intelligence assets or serve as a response test, but even those explanations seem implausible.
Fuzz Posted February 8, 2022 Posted February 8, 2022 I still think the US are doing it. Maybe something cooked up by DARPA to listen in on foreign transmissions or block their listening devices, but the side effect is the Havana Syndrome. Tough luck if it effects your own people, but hey, it is a great excuse to blame the other side for an attack. 1
Dr vonPuffenberg Posted February 8, 2022 Posted February 8, 2022 Wading into murky waters here… but I remember reading in Soldier of Fortune magazine in the late 90’s ( I was about 13) that there was a weapon/device that could play inaudible frequencies that could make someone vomit or crap their pants. They used an example of a person speaking at a podium getting suddenly ill, or using a larger version of it on an unruly crowd.
