Kierkegaard Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 As many of you have heard, the founding member of Fleetwood Mac, former Bluesbreaker, guitar god Peter Green has passed away. I am truly heartbroken over it, as I have been in love with his tone ever since I was around 4 years old and my father would play "Need Your Love So Bad" in the car. He is one of the reasons I started playing guitar and also why I have the very guitar I have (Corsa Manalishi, which is based on his Les Paul). For those who are unfamiliar with his music I will leave some songs below. To me he is quite possibly the greatest of the British Invasion guitarists, especially from a blues standpoint (the others' being Clapton, Page, Beck, Rory Gallagher). But he wasn't solely a blues guitarist. He was also a masterful songwriter with a beautiful voice. Hopefully he is finally at peace, given his struggles with drug-induced psychosis, turned into full-blown schizophrenia after a couple of rounds of electroconvulsive shock therapy. From his stint with John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers(replacing Clapton "God", only to be nicknamed "The Green God") : Blues with Fleetwood Mac: Need Your Love so Bad, a cover of Little Willie John Two versions of Love that Burns Live and Studio versions of Worried Dream https://youtu.be/Iy7IonOLQd8 https://youtu.be/IxgY9eEFiYM https://youtu.be/PwUs1bV_5yI https://youtu.be/bO8J6RBdirk https://youtu.be/rGY3o53prUU https://youtu.be/xisUSuIT2Fs A very simple, yet flawless songhttps://youtu.be/Rdik8L_Wxx4 Some songs of different genres while still in Fleetwood Mac: Coming your Way( the solo is by Danny Kirwan, though, another departed master) https://youtu.be/JCEqKVDsa0E https://youtu.be/ZKopq5OoEbg https://youtu.be/tRWXZO51ymA https://youtu.be/_lks3ulVDdM Oh Well, Part 1https://youtu.be/VQmmByJwKFI Oh Well, Part 2 has a western Spanish guitar feelhttps://youtu.be/uRFvsLlC_ZM The Green Manalishi, later covered by Judas Priesthttps://youtu.be/kTvKaLW5bu8 The Original Black Magic Woman, later covered by Santanahttps://youtu.be/7eANGHVQS9Q One of the most beautiful songs out there, which Peter claimed was most about himselfhttps://youtu.be/9GPR848mhIs The famous Albatross: https://youtu.be/fXeKi6ZkbOw Solo carrer, the first four songs being off his album The End of the Game, are very experimental Bottoms Uphttps://youtu.be/iC3oeWESI40 Timeless Time, is just incrediblehttps://youtu.be/rCCp4MKjldw The End of The Game, the most intense, the culmination of the albumhttps://youtu.be/V3eurEmgx2Q Heavy Hearthttps://youtu.be/8_SN7WYyhD8 Fool No Morehttps://youtu.be/BXXI87DHL-s I apologise for being overzelous, it has taken me more than 2 hours to write this whole post, it is 3 o'clock in the morning here, but my love for this man just demands this level of detail... He has also recorded with the Peter Green Splinter Group, and has had other famous solo tracks such as Slabo Day or Apostle, but these remain my favourites. Everything, aside from the last song, was recorded in a period that spanned only 4-5 years. Who knows what else he might have recorded had he not awakened his schizophrenia with LSD... But that is not important now, we cherish what remains. May he rest in peace. Sent from my SM-G975F using Tapatalk 3
Ken Gargett Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 good mate of mine was literally emailing me two days ago enjoying green. he has also been a massive lifelong fan. he is feeling the same this morning.
zigarrenziggy Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 Definitely a sad day. I've been listening since I heard the news. A virtuoso and a seminal figure in rock history. He was amongst the artists that inspired me to learn guitar, and to play a Les Paul, at that. RIP
Habana Mike Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 Yes, well missed! I've always been a huge fan, especially the early times. Not much to add as you've listed my favorites and stalwarts already. If you'll indulge me I have a somewhat related side story this has reminded me of. Kelly was a bartender in Old Town Alexandria back in the day. Wanted to be Stevie Nicks when she was young. Mick Fleetwood, another founding member of Fleetwood Mac, decided to open a restaurant/nightclub there and was recruiting. Kelly managed to grab one of a dozen spots out of 2000 applicants. We had elementary school children at the time, both swimmers. Kelly worked the soft openings, grand opening and a few nights more. They're getting ready to stage their first big show, can't recall the band. Going to be a big night - huge tip chance. Turns out our daughter's a pretty good swimmer and they schedule the State All-Star swim meet same night. Kelly is struggling a little between the big night and the swim meet. Great Mom that she is she chose to call out from work. Ashley did great at the meet and the police raided Mick's club, arresting many customers and most of the staff as they found at least a couple keys of coke making the rounds. 1 2
Ryan Posted July 26, 2020 Posted July 26, 2020 I formed a blues band in college nearly 30 years ago. All covers. Fleetwood Mac songs, especially "Stop Messin' Around" and "Need your Love so Bad" were always part of the set. I finally got to see Peter Green on stage in a small venue in Dublin in about 2002, when he was playing with Nigel Watson, I was never sure about that guy's intentions. Peter Green still had the odd bit of magic but much diminished at that stage. Sad to see he died. Here's me in 1992, actually on the same stage where I saw him play later. 2

So you were apparently a semiprofessional musician as I was. For me that means I never made enough to make a living so had to also have another job to eat and pay the rent. Drew me to the restaurant business as you keep kind of the same hours, get to eat day one and meet a few hot chicks working front of house. Biggest problem with this was weekend nights were the busiest so always hard to ask off. Of course those were the same nights we'd get gigs. Easy decision as there was always another restaurant hiring. RIP PG!
