djrey Posted May 22, 2020 Posted May 22, 2020 This is actually my first Magnum 46 (H Upmann in general would be my Godfather cigar at the moment). This box has been resting for about 70 days now and I have been anxious to get one out. There are a few with damaged feet so I chose the worst one for todays review and let the better ones age. I quickly noticed it was not just the foot that is damaged, this cigar has cracks all throughout. Immediately I am terrified as how this will perform. I wet the spots where there are cracks to help keep them from spreading and light up. Draw is a bit snug but manageable. Where is the smoke? First 1/3 and she’s actually burning well but she is putting off nearly zero smoke. I keep putting my fingers on the cracks thinking there is a leak, which there is not as the binder was not cracked apparently. This is terrible, I can barely make out the flavor of tobacco, maybe some cardboard. Second third there is a very small shift. Getting some bitter tobacco now but that’s it. Light bodied at best. Keep wondering where the famous Mag 46 Mongrel is. Hard to believe it’s that much of a dud to where it tastes lighter than a 20 year old Dominican. Final third is where some flavor comes out but I can‘t say it’s a good flavor at all. Mostly burnt coffee, some wood and every now and then a touch of bitterness. I walked away from my first Mag 46 extremely let down. I don’t think I have had less flavor in a cigar in my 10 years in the hobby. The wrapper seems thinner than tissue paper, so maybe that’s part of it? Sadly the rest of the box looks similar. I pray there is some hope for the rest of this box... 60 pts. Only because the thing held together and didn’t completely blow apart when lit. 3 4
Popular Post 99call Posted May 22, 2020 Popular Post Posted May 22, 2020 Holy moly! that cigar looks like Sonny, after his toll-gate execution. "looka-tha-mess-they-make-a-my-boy!?" 1 4
Goodfortune Posted May 22, 2020 Posted May 22, 2020 Sorry to hear and see. Hopefully the next one is a lot better for you! 1
SmokyFontaine Posted May 22, 2020 Posted May 22, 2020 You just described by EXACT experience with a box of Magnum 54's I unfortunately acquired. I smoked one and couldn't get any smoke off of it, although it burned, at throughout the process I kept waiting for anything that represented even a hunt of flavor. I would've expected the smaller ring gauge to give you more, but maybe it's just a brand that isn't going to do it for me. Sorry for your lousy experience, albeit slightly relieved to hear it isn't just me though :/ 1

I mainly stuck to Partagas for years but I got some HUHC and fell in love with the sweet shortbread flavor. Grabbed the cabinet of 2019 46’s knowing that 19 has been a great year. Figured it would be a very safe bet. I’m just really hoping that it was a dud (and the whole box is not a dud.)
