H.Upmann Magnum 46 TES OCT 16 (DRRW)

This was my first box of H Upmann and it almost killed the marca for me. Luckily I ended up purchasing a boxes of the Half Coronas, the Number 2, and the Sir Winston. All the smokes from the Magnum 46 box have been terrible. I haven’t had one in over a year so I thought I’d give it a shot. 

First third was decent. Very tight draw on a punch so I punched it a few more times. The draw was still tight so I had to double puff it. Flavors were Predominantly Leather, pepper, and wood. Every few puffs I would get a hint of chocolate or vanilla. Honestly it tasted like a cheaper version of the Sir Winston. Almost as if it was the failed attempt at the later stages of making the blend of a Winnie. Still not terrible, but hardly delicious. 

The second third exploded. Literally, my cigar blew up like someone put a firecracker inside. The wrapper split halfway up the cigar and caused more construction issues. Flavors were not all bad though and the cigar showed some promise of complexity. I got more of the flavors from the first third but mint actually peeked through. I’ve never gotten mint from a cigar. Not my favorite flavor but something different. 

Just as I was about to close out the second third, the cigar took a turn for the worst. It began to lose all flavor. All I could get was A bitter ash taste. Not even a toasted tobacco flavor, but like an ash tray full of cigarette butts. I could only stomach a few puffs before I tossed it. Maybe all the double puffing from the first third took its toll on this stick?

I have half a box left and the plan is to put these things away for another five years to see if anything happens. I have zero interest in digging into this box anytime soon. I’ve had the same feeling with a box of 2015 Monte 2s but I wanted to give the magnum a shot for this review. 

I’m trying to come up with a number/100 but I can’t even give this a rating. Unsmokable.

Double puff cigars make me upset.

Too bad. I have a 2015 box of RyJ Churchills that are all flat. They suck. Yet RYJ Churchill is one of my favorite sticks. I've only had great experiences with Mag 46. But all my stock is 2017-2019.

I agree. You should never have to work that hard to enjoy (or not in this case) a cigar.
