Is this anything like the cuban cut? using the finger nail to trace around the cap?

Yes, this is what I was thinking. I believe that is what is being referred to.

Taught to me by Rob, and I have been using it ever since.

Look, it is not elegant like a $100 cutter, but it works. I have gotten to the point that I use it almost exclusively. Thanks Rob!!!

Get your nails done beforehand please. For the love of Allah. I like to keep my lunch in my stomach.

Rob showed me as well in Cuba. I had ask him about 5 times. Great when you go fishing as it saves me losing a cutter.

... I think it was in Vegas, over a decade ago! Made fun of him for doing it but never forgot about it. I cannot recall when I first needed to use my God given cutters, but I have used them many times since!!! -LOL

I usually cut my nails pretty short, but after they start growing out, I like to use the circle-the-top-of-the-cap with your nails to make a punch-style hole. I imagine it is pretty close to what is being described here. Works really well, tbh. The biggest problem is with thin and/or fragile wrappers.

And here I thought I’d finally joined the rest of civilization by purchasing a V-cutter a few months ago...?

One of the things I like about using the fingers is that it will more easily reveal a divot (if the cigar was rolled with one) than using a straight cut.

Or best employed when some over-zealous and under-brained airport security anonymous henchman thinks your cutter is a weapon to access the cockpit and confiscates your brand new cutter - yes, I'm talking about those clowns at MIA Miami !!

Were they trained by the bumble brothers circus ?? They are certainly sponsored by KFC !
