Popular Post RDB Posted January 24, 2020 Popular Post Posted January 24, 2020 This is actually the youngest cigar I own, but I dropped the damn thing when inspecting the goods, smashed the beautiful wrapper, and had to glue it back together with Perfect Repair. So when the review comp came along... to the fire it goes! First of all, kudos to Perfec Repair: the surgery worked very well, and there were no problems or funny tastes. The burn was a little wonky, but it’s a very young stick and I was outside on a damp, cold day. Fine construction. This was a very tasty and complex journey! The start was reminiscent of a youngish Esplendido. Nutty, milky coffee, smooth and rich, with a sense of sweetness but not the overt citrus or honey that Cohiba can develop with time. A lot of transition, from an initial touch of grassiness, through some fleeting fennel and other savoury spices, to a darker woodiness. By halfway it was a different beast: campfire, dark earth and burnt pastry sweetness, with a little Szechuan pepper. Rather like the CoRo from the blind comp actually. Tons of smoke, and begging to be retrohaled. Building from well under medium to clearly over. By the last third I was feeling the nicotine and decided to leave it there. But my goodness I am glad to have the rest of a full cab of these. Score: a strong 1 (on the 1/0 scale). 14
RDB Posted January 24, 2020 Author Posted January 24, 2020 @FrancisK7 Let me preface this by saying I think Cohiba is the most frustrating and inconsistent marca, and often the worst value. Most of the regular production is twice the price of similar sized cigars by other excellent houses. All the same I buy and smoke ‘em and love a good one, and I think just about all of the regular production Cohibas have their place. I definitely don’t see them in a simple hierarchy of quality, it’s more about the setting and the time I have to smoke. Of the 1492 (siglo) line I particularly like the II (petit corona) and the IV (corona gorda). I don’t think there’s a straight forward evolution in style from I to VI. Then from the classica line I especially like the robusto, esplendido and lancero. I’m never going to have a use for the Sig I or the medio siglo, because I just don’t see Cohiba as a quick smoke. But others may love em, and those two are reputed to be particularly full flavoured. Wrapper colour and age make a huge difference to Cohiba. 1
Hammer Smokin' Posted January 25, 2020 Posted January 25, 2020 what can I say about Cohiba....I hate it that I love them so much. Most cigars I go into hoping I'm going to love it...Cohiba's I go in thinking "see, this'll be just a meh smoke and I'll stop buying these overpriced cigars"....and more times than not I finish the cigar and think "damnit, another fantastic Cohiba...". My love for the brand costs me money, that's for sure. Wish I could develop a taste for Partagas instead, lol. 2
Tstew75 Posted January 25, 2020 Posted January 25, 2020 What some folks tend to gloss over is how important factory is for Cohiba. They roll them all over the damn island these days (can you say $425 provincial-factory rolled CoRos??) , sometimes with poor results. I know some older school guys that have been smoking Cohibas for 15+ years that think the only true Cohibas come from El Laguito. The more I smoke the more I tend to agree. The only vitolas I haven't seen in the past 2 years bearing a UAO code are Sig 3/4/5 & the Maduro 5 line. 1

I haven’t had a Cohiba in a while but a buddy and I did a 13 stick showdown last night. I enjoyed elements of every other cigar there but the Corona Robusto had a mouth filling richness and a density of smoke that was world class. The flavor profile wasn’t my favorite but just the overall smoking experience was. I typically like the Monte 2 flavor profile but again this smoke was just regal and I wanted it to be anything but. Any other Cohiba’s you recommend I try that are richer towards coffee, cream, chocolate?
T.52 Posted February 6, 2020 Posted February 6, 2020 13 stick showdown last night?!? Wow! I think you need to open a new thread and give us details! 2
