Ken Gargett Posted November 24, 2019 Posted November 24, 2019 a kiwi mate (actually an aussie mate who lives there but that is akin to giving up citizenship) sent me this. whoever came up with this crap should be buried in wet cement. Department of Corrections to call inmates 'men in our care' not 'prisoners’ The Department of Corrections says it's shifting away from using terms like 'prisoner' and 'offender' to terms such as 'men in our care'. It's part of a new plan to reduce reoffending - but the Opposition says it political correctness. Corrections has 10,000 prisoners in its custody and it wants to give them their mana back - by not calling them 'prisoners'
Chibearsv Posted November 24, 2019 Posted November 24, 2019 I'm offended! It should be "folks in our care". Now watch them all mend their ways
Akela3rd Posted November 24, 2019 Posted November 24, 2019 'Persons in our care' surely. Sexist bastards (sorry, sexist persons of nonlinear parentage).Sent from 47171 Lempo
99call Posted November 24, 2019 Posted November 24, 2019 'Mana' I've understood this (in discussion with my Kiwi mates) to mean, how someone carries themselves with pride, respect for others, dignity, etc. The prison system currently completely misunderstands what these kids are afraid of. Poor kids are not afraid of domestic violence, smoking spice, and the free use of Playstations. This is their life as standard!! the only difference is, they don't have to pay any rent in prison. What they are really afraid of, is being humiliated in public, the lack of ability to project themselves as the 'tough guy'. It would also provide a visible deterrent to other kids, who never get to see what it is, to have your freedom taken away from you. Realities are hidden behind brick walls, If a young lad on the wrong path, saw a group of lads in pink jump suits, in the local park, picking up litter, they might genuinely think "F-that!!.....thats not happening to me". Respect is key, and it should be hammered home that you have to give it, to get it. I think the prison system should be carrot and stick, in terms of humiliation. I think life as standard should be litter picking in pink jump suits, cleaning out 'fat balls' in the sewers. but if an inmate shows respect, he or she will have the opportunity to learn a trade, or access training days with the military. Instilling discipline is expensive, both in terms of time and finance, but with a bit of intelligence the prison system could A, provide a service to the tax paying public, and B, provide the inmates with the structure and means to better themselves.
