Melbourne Cup Day.   FOH Betting

Melbourne Cup day today and Australia comes to a standstill as "the race that stops a nation" is really an afternoon where the entire country gets on the piss and fritters away a couple of billion dollars. :cigar:

it is the only day of the year I bet. It is the worst day of the year to bet.  However that doesn't stop an idiot like me going through a wad of cash chasing down races across four states and if things get really bad this evening.......the opening races from south africa

Aussies, Let us know your tips for today.  From your replies I will put together a boxed trifecta (or similar) ....and if that comes in we will all come together and have a party indeed!

The Deck kicks off at 12:30 :spotlight:

Over to you  !

I would pick these to place or win:

Constantinople (my money is on this nag to win)

Mer de Glace (good contender with a win at Caulfield, but may run out of steam)

Cross Counter (can he back up his previous win this year?)

Finche (4th place last year, an outside chance)

Prince of Arran (placed last year, another good outside chance)

Risky bets that could come up trumps - Surprise Baby, Vow & Declare

Top three - Constantinople, Cross Counter, Mer de Glace (in that order)

Yes, I'm picking 2 runners that are unproven at 3200m, but they have good form.

My trifecta

1st - 1,2,3,11,19

2nd - 1,2,3,11,12,18,19,23

3rd - 1,2,3,11,12,18,19,23

$50 for 23%

To sum up, it's a lottery. Good luck picking this one.

As someone who use to be in the horseracing world for a short period of time here's my general overview to help with betting.

Jockey's mean a lot. Check who who has the highest winning percentage this season....try and bet only the jockey's with the highest percantages. They only ride the top horses, sounds obvious but jockeys know who's running well or not and will ride those horses.

Don't make exotic bets stick to picking a horse to win or place the payouts will be lower obviously but the winnings will add up and before you know you are in the green a decent amount. Be a grinder! (not the dating app lol)

Read the program and pay close attention to how horses have run in the current weather conditions. Are they good on a sloppy track / have they ran in a sloppy track...(rainy).

Also check the program to see how the horse has placed in past races but also how long have those races been distance wise (also known as furlongs). Horses that start fast and fade can still be good on a shorter race track.

Hope that helps and good luck to all.

If anyone has access to the program I can do a quick analysis and provide some insight.

Also remember odds change on the fly and who is currently the favourite to win can change quickly in the last couple of minutes so take the current odds with a grain of salt. Para-mutual betting changes odds as bets come in.

Why have such a big race on a Tuesday?

The first one god knows how many years ago was held on a Tuesday Google ? ...they have stick with it for 170 years or so. It was known as the race that stops a nation...not so anymore . stunning how many people have become anti horse racing in all formats...My partners daughters school are fund raising against horse racing. Some offices are doing the same

Today was the first time I passed on watching  it. Will it be here in 50 years , no way I can see that happening.

For those who had a bet or two...I hope you won a few dollars..had some fun .

westie, i'd guess that the first one was just another race and somehow, it got blown up as special. been a public holiday in melbourne ever since.

i'm not anti-horse racing (whoops - i left the 's' out of 'horse' the first time through. thankfully caught it. that would have been one hell of a freudian slip). i just have absolutely no interest in it. and i am completely put off by the way about 90% of the nation, which would not know which end of a horse went forward, suddenly become experts for a day. i can live without the cup.

the other 264 days of the year, i just assume it is even more corrupt than cycling and boxing - which were once sports i loved.

You have a little more latitude than me...could agree more .
