So let me start by saying I'm pretty new to Cuban cigars....so please be gentle if you find this to be a silly question....I'm learning....

This is my 8th cigar from a box of Partagas D4's dated July 2018....

The first 7 were great...this one taste nothing like the others...lots more black pepper and not nearly as good as the others....is this normal...

Thanks Jim

Jim.

You box is made up of cigars from different rollers  so you can expect subtle differences generally and the occasional "huge" difference.

7 out of 8 being consistent in a July 18 box is exceptional.  You should go and buy a lottery ticket :D

What you are experiencing is better than normal. Nothing to worry about. :ok:

Yes, entirely normal. While you’ll certainly run into boxes that are remarkably consistent, on occasion, you’re going to have some with even more variation than you’ve experiencing so far.  Take some consolation in the fact that back in the day, the situations were considerably worse in every way...other than better strains of tobacco (my opinion only). Currently we are in what I call the Slver Age of CCs as far as construction...way better than ever before, but still room for improvement. But opinions differ of course. As far as fill is concerned, I prefer a very easy draw for a variety of reasons, so think that things are quite peachy (relative to the past). At the same time, folks who prefer the restricted draw that Cuba is known for, probably are less pleased, and may even consider it a step backwards in the fill part of construction. Everybody agrees that there are way less plugged and unsmokably tight cigars...to the point that I’ve had one in the past year.
i apologize for getting way away from the OP. Your question was about the blending efficiency or accuracy of the rollers. Someone above explained that a box almost always has cigars from multiple rollers. Maybe one of the six had tobacco left over from another vitola and used it ? Maybe one roller used more ligero than the others ? Maybe one roller was finishing off a hand/bale while the rest were rolling from an entirely different bale/hand ? Maybe one of the filler leafs ran out, so they doubled up on another ?
A pet peeve of mine, and actually related, is that cigar that tastes perfumed...like it had spent a day in HER purse. Had a PLPC just yesterday, fresh out of the cab, that tasted like my great aunt’s bathroom smelled. The next one was a PLPC just like the 20 others so far. My assumption has been that the roller had perfume on her hands. Now, having experienced the temperatures in some rolling rooms, don’t get me started on why I think some cigars have a salty taste
Do you think humidity going from 65% to 61-62 % would change the flavors....it seems like the burn is better at the 61-62% rh. Just wondering if it would effect flavor..

Thanks Jim

cigars have some way since they rolled till being packed. after the roller gave out rolled unbanded cigars those go to acclimatization room and after pretty long time to banding and packaging room when they are packing in boxes by wrapper colours. so, cigars in the boxes might be from many different rollers especially when we're talking about popular vitolas like PSD4.

Normal. I also find what I have consumed, food and drink, can impact the flavors I pick up.

This is huge. Especially if you eat/drink something particularly salty, spicy or sweet, your palate can be severely desensitized.

My uncle told me once about an exercise they did in culinary school. The students would wash their mouth with a saline solution of, say, 1X salinity. They would then taste a dish and comment on the flavors they picked up. Then they would wash their mouth with a 2X salinity wash and taste the same dish again. Their perceived flavors were severely diminished. Finally, they would rinse with the original 1X salinity wash again, and taste the same dish again. Their perceived flavors in the dish were again, severely diminished, as a result of the preceding wash with 2X salinity.

Same goes for wine tastings. Your sommelier will always start you with dry reds, gradually working toward a full white. If you drank that sweet reisling first, your palate would be ruined for the red.

I brushed my teeth with baking soda toothpaste once before smoking a cigar. I tasted NOTHING. it was a mag 46...

I’ve grown ever aware of the effects of my previous consumptions on the sensitivity of my palate. If i recently ate sweets, I don’t even bother with a cigar. It’d be a waste.

Honestly, my best experience with palate sensitivity is first thing in the morning. Just lightly brush my teeth with no toothpaste. Grab a cup of low acid coffee (turquino is my favorite) and fire one up.
