On occasion, I've been able to get away with ROTT. Most times though, the cigars benefit from a month or two of "down time" to rehydrate and stabilize. Sometimes they have spent long hours in high altitude, low pressure environments (think airplanes) or days in hot warehouses or postal service facilities (not to mention trucks). These factors can really affect humidity and flavor.

This is a more recent phenomenon for me. But I'm always curious just how much they improve after they rest and acclimatize. I put 12 of them in a small airtight tupperware container with a hygrometer for 24 hrs after receiving them. They are sitting at 60% RH

I almost always try one ROTT as well, if it's a box of 25 or more. I've had some good ROTT smokes, too. Some not so good.

Same here, I usually lack the self-control not to try one ROTT, mixed results so far with that.  Sometimes I'll wait a week or 2 before I cave; still well short of the recommend downtime, but that usually seems to be sufficient for my palate

It could all be in my head, but it seems more often than not, the first one out of a box ROTT is a flavor bomb. Then as they re-acclimate to the proper humidity, they go through a several month period of diminishing flavor, after which, the vibrant flavor slowly returns.

It's interesting you mention that because I bought a box of PL Picadores, and I had 2 ROTT and thought they were fantastic. I had another earlier this week, probably 60 days or so since I received them and I was disappointed. It was like the sweetness had mostly disappeared. Guess I'll try them again in 3 to 6 months

Yup, I recall that Picadores was one of the boxes I experienced this with as well. Another that I remember was RyJ Churchill. The first one ROTT blew me away, and next few were a bit meh. Happily, 8 months later, they’re back baby!

I almost always try one for a box rott. I’ll grab an ugly single out of the box and let it sit in my humidor at 65 for 3-4 days to 2 weeks and try it. To me, that’s fairly Rott. I have had some great ones rott and some not so good. I have also had a similar experience with a psp box of picadores. Had one rott (within a week) and it was a flavour bomb. Was so excited to try another and waited a few more weeks. Was disappointed. And another after a few more months and was disappointed. I let them sit for 8 plus months and the last one I had a few weeks ago was amazing.

I have never had a cigar ROTT.

I always let my boxes of cigars I purchase  acclimate in one of 3 of my humi. at 65% for at least 4 months and if I want to smoke one I then I have a traveldor with cedar trays (that I keep at 60% - 62% that I transfer them to for a few days (my way of dry boxing) before I smoke one.

I feel that smoking a cigar ROTT is a waste of a potentially good cigar.

And if the box is a recent box code (the last one of two years) I keep them in the humi to let them age for at least 3 years.

Yep I almost always try one ROTT....same as others, most are good.....but them have to leave min 6 months before they are good again. That was tough at first , but now have a good selection, so much easier

I was of this mindset until recently. I smoked 4 from this 50 cab so far. First 3 were phenomenal. Now after a couple days, I tried a 4th one....complete opposite. So I will let them rest a year and revisit.
