I could not disagree, as they also have way too many different cigars in their catalog--many of which are unshakeable dog rockets. Yes, the owner's business expertise comes from the field of packaging and marketing wrist-watches and it shows in the priorities of the company's practices.
canadianbeaver Posted July 31, 2018 Posted July 31, 2018 We have fun teasing NC’s, but really have no personal hate-on for them. Honest! Gurkha: Brown Pickle Rocky Pootel Poo-dermo CB 1
BrightonCorgi Posted July 31, 2018 Posted July 31, 2018 Gurkha would be a lot better received by the existing cigar community if they did not put down Habanos. Aston does not put down Ferrari as a brand, but offer something different in the same class. It's alright (or would be smart) for Gurkha to acknowledge a great cigar for what it is. Does not have to be only their cigars are great...

These companies quietly go about making their cigars and don't need Gurkha's BS sales tactics. 2

What gets me is ego of their company and marketing department. Don't tell me its a Rolls Royce but for me...just this once...for a limited time...its 98% off...shhhhh, just between us. What I find most ridiculous about Ghurka and why I mock them so, is because they think we are all stupid and because they think so highly of themselves. If you produce a Yugo...sell the crap out of that Yugo. Don't try to sell me a Yugo priced like a Rolls Royce...just on sale (today only...ssshhh). I am not a moron...most of the time Their motto is "If you can't beat it...bash it." You summed it up perfectly. I wish Rob would weigh in his opinion on these clowns.
luckme10 Posted July 31, 2018 Posted July 31, 2018 “Gurkha Cigars was pleased to learn that during Clinton’s administration, President Clinton was a huge fan of the Gurkha Grand Reserve Cigar as it is among many in the Washington circuit. In light of the recent announcement about the HBO movie “Special Relationship” featuring Clinton’s personal relationships, Gurkha Cigars is happy to announce that they too are part of oval office history," said Roy MacLaren, Vice President Sales and Marketing of Gurkha. Gurkha lit the fire between Monica Lewinsky and Bill Clinton? How much more publicity can you ask for? 1
bpm32 Posted July 31, 2018 Posted July 31, 2018 I think most of the turn off with Gurkha is not so much the product as it is the weirdly out of phase marketing. They are clearly trying to sell their product to Saudi princes. The new style of marketing is more like, "hey here's this dude who's passionate about making PRODUCT X. He's either passionate about making PRODUCT X better or has been making PRODUCT X the same way for a really long time. Here are high quality photos of him doing his thing. He's very authentic and doesn't really care what haters think. You can visit his shop and shake his hand if you want."

I'd be shocked if he didn't already know. While articles like this help pay the bills, they damage the author's credibility so much in the long-term that I wonder if it is worth it. I have a fair bit of empathy for someone trying to make it as a journalist in an age of free information, but knowingly feeding the audience that kind of garbage isn't the way to do it. 2
