Could be that they are discontinuing a packaging option. Have we ever seen a cigar with two different packaging types be completely discontinued in one fell swoop?

Good question. The answer is yes:

ERDM Gran Coronas in 2002, ERDM Isabel in 1985, ERDM Petit Lonsdales in 2003, HU Coronas in 2002, HdM Cristales No. 1 in the 1970s, HdM Super Selection No. 1 in the 1970s, Monte 6 & 7 in 1998, Partagas Half Coronas in the 1980s, Partagas Lonsdales in 2002, Partagas Petit Coronas in 2002, Partagas Tres Petit Coronas in 2002, PL Coronas in the 1980s, PL Lanceros in the 1980s, PL Small Coronas in the 1980s, Punch Ninfas in 2002, RA Coronas in 2002, RA Palmitas in 2002.

So it has happened but it's not common. Only 20 or so instances post-Rev. Almost always one or more formats are cut prior to a cigar's demise.

I have never yet formed an opinion on the tasting of one cigar. I would just be cheating myself as there are too many variables which are difficult to control (including my own self).

I have even smoked 20 or so various Monte Opens :D

I wasn't a fan of Mag 46's years ago, but the recent production has been fantastic.  Made a believer out of me.

can't agree.

With cigars, a firm opinion based on one interaction is worthless.  There are simply too many variables.

Who said to "go and buy a box"?    A single at a different time, different circumstance. Try  maybe 3 over a year or two. If you find it is not to your taste....it is a reasoned opinion.

Problem is here in the USA one cannot head to his local LCDH and buy a single here and a single there. I buy whole boxes, and for my money have to make sure it is a cigar that I enjoy and get value from. Besides the flavor of the Mag50 tasting bland, it is too large a vitola for my liking. I am mostly robustos and marevas smoker with a larger sized cigar once in a blue moon.

Smoked a Mag 50 once. (gifted to me). It was one of the most mundane, boring, too large a format cigars I have ever had. I would never spend money on these. Maybe the 46 is better. I like smaller vitolas. The mareva is really a great size 5X42.

I would never base an opinion on one cigar.

or two, for that matter.

I agree the format is a bit large, but some folks like them.

I tried for years to find a good Partagas SD4.

Found some recently.

worth the effort.

They have invested pretty heavily in the "Magnum" line.   46 48 50 54 56

Is this really a "line" besides sharing the same basic name, I wonder?

A line of variety.

made my way starting years ago from 46 to 48, 50, 54 ( haven't tried the 56 yet)

all different all to my liking (though my liking starts with a minimum of 2 years)

As much as " Siglo"

I wouldn't call it a line. The three Mags in regular production could not be less similar to each other and were introduced years apart. And they seem to use the Magnum moniker for special releases enough to make me think it's just a name they like for HU.

I would say the Siglo series, at least I-V, is much more consistent with the definition of a "line". All are regular production models, introduced together with similar profiles. The VI and MS I consider to be outliers to the line. Same with the Hoyo San Juan and Rio Seco to the Le Hoyo line.

I never smoked only one cigar of any kind.Always 2 or 3 and smoked them over time then I was able to make up my mind if I liked it or not
