Ken Gargett Posted April 7, 2018 Posted April 7, 2018 Okay, NO USING THE INTERNET. Otherwise, this is completely pointless and spoils it for others who do the right thing. Who first said these phrases, sayings, lines? And if you can name where they first appeared, again NO INTERNET, even better. And sure, they may have been used in common parlance before they appeared at the hand of these authors but there is no record. Many of them might seem like common everyday sayings or phrases but they all had their origins at the hands of someone, at some stage. I should add that this was a list to which I added a few of my own faves. Give it your best shot. 1. "WILD GOOSE CHASE" 2. "GREEN-EYED MONSTER" 3. "PURE AS THE DRIVEN SNOW" 4. "SEEN BETTER DAYS" 5. "OFF WITH HIS HEAD" 6. "FOREVER AND A DAY" 7. "GOOD RIDDANCE" 8. "FAIR PLAY" 9. "LIE LOW" 10.“FLESH-COLOURED CHRISTS THAT GLOW IN THE DARK/EASY TO SEE WITHOUT LOOKING TOO FAR/THAT NOT MUCH IS REALLY SACRED” 11. "IT'S GREEK TO ME" 12. "AS GOOD LUCK WOULD HAVE IT" 13. "YOU'VE GOT TO BE CRUEL TO BE KIND” 14. "LOVE IS BLIND" 15. "BE-ALL, END-ALL" 16.“I WAS NOT BORN TO LIVE TO DIE” 17. "BREAK THE ICE" 18. "HEART OF GOLD" 19. "KILL WITH KINDNESS" 20.“THE BAND THEY PLAYED THE HOMECOMING THEME AS I CARESSED YOUR CHEEK, THAT RAGGED JAGGED MELODY STILL CLINGS TO ME LIKE A LEECH” 21. "KNOCK, KNOCK! WHO'S THERE?" 22. "LIVE LONG DAY" 23. "YOU CAN HAVE TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING" 24. "THE GAME IS AFOOT"
David88 Posted April 7, 2018 Posted April 7, 2018 I’m pretty sure many if not all are Shakespeare (It does help that I have recently been teaching about some of them) too much of a good thing is As you like it, but I am hopeless at putting the rest to a specific play without the help of the internet.
