H Upmann Royal Robusto LUB Feb 14: ERC

I admit, upon first reading Rob’s description of this review round, I thought I’d probably pass. You see, chocolate as a flavor in a cigar isn’t my favorite thing, which is the main reason I don’t currently have a single Montecristo in my humidor. Before I’m tarred and feathered for this admission, let me say that I’m sure this is just a temporary situation - it’s not like I hate Montecristos.

So last night I pulled a Royal Robusto out of the box, only my second one. I felt like having something a bit different, and although I wasn’t blown away by it’s flavors at the time, I do recall the first one having a unique fig element. I paired this one with a familiar go-to on a warm Hawaiian evening - a Gin Fizz.

Immediately upon lighting, the fig sweetness emerges. Also a base of woodiness. Some woodiness is better than others, and this is a very nice sweet cedar. Then a funny thing happens as I continue to concentrate on what I’m tasting: Cocoa is there, front and center. It’s like that elegant cocoa powder that’s sprinkled on certain fine confections. It’s then that I notice how well the fig, sweet cedar, and elegant cocoa have come together. I definitely don’t remember this with the first one.

I continue smoking the RR, thoroughly enjoying the refined tastes I’m immersed in. And the draw, burn and smoke output are spot on. The cocoa seems to be building, which continues to surprise me since I completely missed this flavor with the first one. I finally decide this is fate, and I have to include this fine example of chocolate delight in the Easter review competition. I snap some photos.

The refined mix of flavors continues throughout, without many complex transformations. The only notable exception was with the cocoa, which seemed to grow richer. By the final third, it took on more of a rich dark chocolate taste, which again, coupled with fig fruitiness and sweet cedar, was simply delicious. I decided to go full tilt boogie with the chocolate in the end, and broke into a bottle of Guinness.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Royal Robusto. Which means I guess I do like chocolate as a flavor after all. Hope everyone enjoyed a great Easter smoke of their own. Aloha!

Nice! I’ve got one of those sitting in the Humi, I’ll be on the lookout for fig. Cheers!
