ayepatz Posted March 27, 2018 Posted March 27, 2018 I’ve always wondered why Belicosos are so named. In English, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, bellicose means this:- Bellicose - Demonstrating aggression and willingness to fight. I’ve been told that Belicosos are so named because their truncated pointed end is reminiscent of a bullet, which would chime with the above definition. Does anybody have a better explanation?
gweilgi Posted March 27, 2018 Posted March 27, 2018 Try and take any of my Bolivar or RA belicosos away from me, and you will see how belligerent I can get.... Good explanation, and likely the correct one -- especially when we also consider the torpedo. 2 1
SirVantes Posted March 27, 2018 Posted March 27, 2018 I don’t know about bellicosity, but I’ve just learned that, in Spanish, a campana is a bell. Does that mean that the end of the BBF that I’m sucking on is the...well, you do the math. 1
shrink Posted March 27, 2018 Posted March 27, 2018 It is so named because it is in the shape of a sword.

Does anybody have a better explanation? Very plausible IMO. After all, in France belicosos and pirámides are often named "obus", ie "shell" (bomb). One the first RE was the JL Obus for France – a belicoso. 1 1

RickHendeson Posted March 30, 2018 Posted March 30, 2018 Interesting question, would love to see some academic literature on it. Never asked myself the question out loud; subconsciously I always though it was because of the swelling shape, like a man puffing out his chest. It gets more and more aggressive (shape wise). I've always perceived cigar shapes from the head to the foot
