Finally did so and although there a slightly learning curve and some bloody nicks, it was too bad.

Colt45 Posted October 7, 2017 Posted October 7, 2017 I'd been DE shaving for the past four months or so (Gillette Rocket HD, Personna Med Prep blades, Vie Long horse hair brush, Pre de Provence soap), but have gone back to cartidges - just too much trauma to the neck, no matter the method / technique. Sticking with the brush and soap, but back to the Sensor, and goodbye to the irritation. For what it's worth, there are a couple of good wet shaving discussions here

Danimalia Posted October 7, 2017 Posted October 7, 2017 I love the feel of a straight razor shave, but I don't do it myself. My facial hair is fine enough that as long as I stay on top of it, regular safety razors work alright.

It’s objective. Some prefer the closeness and feel of a straight razor and other the closeness and feel of a safety razor. Perhaps, initial cost is better for a safety razor.
RazorbackFan Posted October 7, 2017 Posted October 7, 2017 I have yet to step up to a straight razor, but my daily driver is a 2011 Muhle r41. It's the most aggressive (but smooth) safety razor I've ever had. Combined with a Feather blade and a Weber Bulldog handle, this thing will shave the chrome off a bumper!

They can start at around $30 and go into the several hundreds of dollars. I hone my blade every 3-4 months. Some let there’s go a little longer. This is assuming no damage is done to the edge when you strop or otherwise.

They are splash and go, so no need to soak them like most stones. For kitchen knives, I'd get a 1000 and a 4000. I've thinned out my collection a lot recently. EBay, online vendors, most forums, antique stores, me lol. The number of shaves is subjective. Bad stropping technique can kill an edge instantly. Japanese barbers have reported getting thousands of shaves off a single sharpening. The trick is a good piece of leather and good shaving and stropping technique. I have razos that range in cost from $10 to $900. They serve the exact same purpose and perform equally when properly honed. fabes Posted October 12, 2017 Posted October 12, 2017 Been curious about the straight razor, but afraid of the rabbit hole. Went to safety razor 2 years ago and never looked back. I always have a beard, so the shaving is merely keeping edges neat and tidy. My skin used to get really irritated, but with the safety razor and some practice it's really a quick process and the shave is much better. For those who have had trouble and went back to disposables, proper soap lather and a sharp blade makes all the difference! 2
