El Presidente Posted August 31, 2017 Posted August 31, 2017 There is a member with a very good sense of humour who sent me this. He didn't want me to miss out For the FOH runners out there. I hope both of you have a chance to go http://www.roadrunnersports.com/blog/4-reasons-experience-havana-marathon/ 4 REASONS TO EXPERIENCE THE HAVANA MARATHON 2017-08-29 Love a good adventure? We’ve got an especially exciting one in store for you. And it’s much more than just a marathon experience. Tired of running the same local races over and over each year? You may be pushing yourself toward new PRs on familiar courses, but wouldn’t it be exciting to not only enjoy the exhilaration of a new course but also immerse yourself in a cultural experience? If your answer is an enthusiastic ‘yes!’ – and why wouldn’t it be?! – we’ve got the perfect trip for you. ROAD RUNNER SPORTS AND THE CUBA MARATHON Road Runner Sports has partnered with Classic Journeys to provide our VIP club members with an exclusive experience. Classic Journeys will take 100 of our VIPs to Havana, Cuba for the Havana Marathon November 18-21. You’ll experience the irresistible allure of the island’s people, music, food and art. See the full itinerary here and our top four reasons you won’t want to miss this experience below: REASON NO. 1: THE GORGEOUS HAVANA MARATHON Choose to run a 5K, 10K, half marathon or full marathon. The Havana Marathon (see the itinerary tab for details) commences in front of the historical Capitol and weaves through historical districts. You’ll pass the stadium, Revolution Square, run through Del Prado Avenue and along the malecon, a roadway and seawall that stretches for 5 miles. If you’re running the 5K or 10K, expect a relatively flat course. The half marathon and full give way to a hillier, more challenging course, so be sure to fuel adequately before, during and after. It’s the perfect race for those who love culture, a challenge and the promise of delectable Cuban cuisine (and recovery rum) post-race. Check out the course below: REASON NO. 2: THE STUNNING ART, ARCHITECTURE, AND HISTORY Havana is renowned for its homages to day’s past. The charming colonial buildings and cobblestone streets welcomed literary and musical giants like Hemingway, Caruso and more. During your weekend with Classic Journeys, you’ll be treated to: : A tour of Havana Vieja (Old Havana) A visit to Hemingway’s home A guided tour through the La Muralendo neighborhood, famous for its stunning murals and art installations A visit to the Museum of Fine Arts REASON NO. 3: THE DELICIOUS LOCAL CUISINE Food, as it is for runners, is serious business for Cubans. Cuban cuisine is blend of Native American Taino food, Spanish, African and Caribbean cuisines. Expect to see traditional rice dishes, like arroz con pollo (rice with chicken), boliche (a Cuban pot roast dish with eye round beef roast stuffed with ham), Cuban sandwiches and more. And, of course, look forward to washing your meals down with potent coffee and equally potent rum. During this tour, you’ll enjoy: Meals in privately owned paladar restaurants (it’ll beat your typical pre-race meal of bland pasta!) Post-race celebrations at El Floridita, one of Ernest Hemingway’s favorite bars REASON 4: THE THRILLING ACTIVITIES Havana has something for everyone. During this Classic Journeys trip, choose from (or attend all three!) the following activities: A tour of Cuba’s oldest cigar factory An introduction to members of a 1950s classic car cooperative A salsa lesson the evening after the race to help loosen up tired muscles TRAVEL POLICIES AND CUBA If you’re wondering about the rules governing travel to Cuba, click hereto learn more about the updated travel policy and how it applies to those traveling with Classic Journeys through this Road Runner Sports partnership. mgcrunch Posted August 31, 2017 Posted August 31, 2017 Neat, thanks for sharing! This goes on the bucket list, alongside the Inca Trail Marathon. I scratched the international running itch when I was in Sydney. Stumbled across a 10k advert on my penultimate day, it started early enough that I could catch my flight. Stopped twice to expel the bad sushi I ate for dinner (lesson learned) but had a blast.
GrouchoMarx Posted August 31, 2017 Posted August 31, 2017 Ummm... when you said "havana marathon" - I thought you meant drinking rum and smoking CCs. 1

LLC Posted September 1, 2017 Posted September 1, 2017 A few years ago our flight was delayed and we arrived at The Hotel National around 3:30 am. The group of us threw our bags in the room and then went to the back for drink, cigars and Cuban sandwiches We watched the sun come up and then the marathon going by on the Malacon. The interesting thing was almost all the runners at the front were running bare foot. What a great night/morning. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
