Hocky27 Posted August 6, 2017 Posted August 6, 2017 Hi All, With so many different brands and sizes out there, I was wondering if there is a general consensus as to a particular size for each brand that best exemplifies the flavour profiles of that brand ? Also, as a newbie, is there a particular size that is better than others to get a feel for the different brands ? Thanks in advance.
Stump89 Posted August 6, 2017 Posted August 6, 2017 It's a tough call. Pretty much all based on personal preference based on flavor/body/strength. Also depends on what length and ring gauge you prefer, everyone's palates are different. I personally like a lot of different marcas and prefer the thinner ring gauges, though it's always fun to try something different. I would suggest maybe trying a sampler or 2 of specific sizes you prefer from the host and seeing exactly what you like. You can go down the rabbit hole fast once you start buying and trying a bunch out, enjoy the ride!
Spanishcedar Posted August 6, 2017 Posted August 6, 2017 I do not think there will be a general consensus, reason being, there are different blends with different vitolas even within each marca. The smaller vitolas will be more of a minimal investment so you could consider that to be better I suppose.
Colt45 Posted August 6, 2017 Posted August 6, 2017 It is a tough call - every marque does not have the same sizes. Were it the case, I'd personally say corona or petit corona. But it just doesn't apply.

I also love robustos but find they often taste similar.Sent from my SM-N910G using Tapatalk 1
Customsfan Posted August 6, 2017 Posted August 6, 2017 Also some smoke different sizes depending on how much time they have to smoke.
shlomo Posted August 6, 2017 Posted August 6, 2017 No such thing as "signature" vitola. Just more popular ones. As for getting an idea of what to expect with each marca based on a single vitola, not likely. Vitola and type of cut make a huge difference in flavours, "buzz" from tobacco, overall enjoyment of a cigar, and so on. I doubt anybody can smoke a Monte 2 and understand what a Montecristo is all about. From the Monte PE to the Especial 1 to the double Edmundo and the Number 4 all have some similarities, but many variances as well. 3
Customsfan Posted August 6, 2017 Posted August 6, 2017 Question: So a "vitola" is the size and not the shape?
garbandz Posted August 6, 2017 Posted August 6, 2017 Traditionally, Marcas blended their Petit Corona vitola to represent the house flavors. Since some Cuban Marcas no longer offer one, you have to try what's out there. https://www.cubancigarwebsite.com/ Here is a resource you will enjoy in your journey toward CCs..............

In Cuba it refers to the size and shape of a cigar (vitola de galera factory name, vitola de salida market name) and also to a particular size of cigar in an individual packing. In Spain it means a cigar band or ring (vitolfilia cigar band collecting). To some it has an almost spiritual meaning encapsulating every aspect of their cigar of choice." habanos.com 2
Hocky27 Posted August 6, 2017 Author Posted August 6, 2017 Thanks for all the replies. Looks like it's going to take quite some time to figure out exactly what I like. Will be trying to source petit coronas as a means of comparing the different brands as at least a starting point.

And when the pc or minuto/perla doesn't exist or can't be found (as in the case of Juan Lopez), take the robusto (VR Famoso, ERDM Choix Suprême, Juan Lopez No.2, Hoyo Epicure No.2 or Petit Robusto. In the case of Romeo&Julieta, the "robusto" Exhibicion No.4 is better than any of the offerings in the pc size – they are legion. IMHO. 2

It is a wonderful cigar that has great flavors totally different from the JL1 OR JL2.Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk

JLFIRST Posted August 8, 2017 Posted August 8, 2017 err… read again my post… the JL pc is almost impossible to find these days…Sorry, I reread your post. Also sorry you have such a hard time finding these. I haven't ran into that problem. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk
BrightonCorgi Posted August 8, 2017 Posted August 8, 2017 It would be best to debate each marca decide which regular production cigars really "taste or represent the marca". Pick 3-4 cigars... I find pc cigars to be good across the board, but it's not a usual size cigar for me. Pick your marca....
