Great white shark jumps into boat

A 73-year-old Evans Head man had a lucky escape over the weekend when a 2.7 metre great white shark jumped into his boat.

According to reports on the ABC, Terry Selwood was fishing offshore from Evans Head when the shark jumped clear of his outboard and into the boat.

"I caught a blur of something coming over the boat … and the pectoral fin of the shark hit me on the forearm and knocked me down on the ground to my hands and knees," Selwood told the ABC.

"He came right over the top of the motor and then dropped onto the floor," he said.

"He was 2.7 metres long and about 200 kilos.

"There I was on all fours and he's looking at me and I'm looking at him and then he started to do the dance around and shake and I couldn't get out quick enough onto the gunwale."

box jellyfish are now kid's stuff. we found a more deadly one - the irukandji jellyfish. tiny little thing - a cubic centimetre, apparently the venom from the stingers it can fire off like little darts is more than 100 times as powerful as a cobra. and they are sometimes found in blooms of a great many. not that you can see them.

Irukandji are deadlier, but the box jellyfish kills faster. For those not in the know, read up on irukandji syndrome.

Yeah, but worrying about it won't change anything, nor will hoping for one or the other.

If we worried about everything that could kill you in Australia, we'd never have time for the important things, like arguing about whether tomato sauce goes on top of the pie or squirted into the centre.

It is a matter of contention in some circles. Back in primary school, one of the lunch ladies would jam the squeeze bottle nozzle into the pie and squirt the sauce on the inside and on the top. Then there's the crowd who think sauce should be on the plate or applied to each bite, so you can adjust the amount of sauce.

fuzz, i know you are from nsw but may i suggest you do not take your culinary lead from primary school lunch ladies. matt preston would have a fit and if he were still with us, AA Gill would be having kittens.

while not the focus of this thread (i'm allowed to hijack my own thread), i recently discovered that wombats, at night, produce around 100 poo pellets to mark their territory. nothing too weird re that. what is odd is that these are almost perfectly cubic. and no one has a clue how they manage it.

Hmmm ...  so why not import a breeding colony of snapping turtles to deal with the jelly fish problem?
