Last year it was Ireland and we met up with moderator @Ryan for dinner and cigar excellence! This year the corporate trip with mrbeaver's North American co is to Hawaii. Never been there. I am on

Hat's off to ya, but I guess a CEO can support multiple wives...

I always have to chuckle when I hear people talk about Hawaii like it’s Disneyland, and once they get past the high cost of admission, by god we locals had better accommodate their every whim. Fo

From NorCal, Hawaii is much easier and faster to reach than any other comparable destination and prices are just like home :lookaround:

@Islandboy said it more charitably than I could. At this point it sounds like refund or not you would have more fun just staying home and smoking on your porch. Vacations you don't enjoy aren't worth it, and Hawaii will never be cheaper than vacationing in a developing country for a host of reasons. At least if you stay home you can smoke freely and save on food expenses, even if the flight and condo are sunk costs. Less money, more fun and you can sleep in your own bed.

Thanks much for the locals perspective - I think it stands true for many tourist destinations.

You’re welcome. I meant it to be a general perspective based on my 56 years of experience, to hopefully help anyone planning to come here understand the dynamics a bit better.

Of course - common sense should prevail (and this has nothing to do with FoP). I've a few personal recollections, but I'll just say that if I visit someone's house, i won't try to dictate what they should or shouldn't do....

YOLO!  Which is also why I love enjoying cigars on vacation. This trip has become a pain in the ass, not so much a vacation when I can't enjoy one of the very things in life that is a 'de-stresser.'

The wife and I have been to our share of tropical paradises that don't cost an arm and a leg. For some reason, she likes Hawaii.....and of course I'm the @$$ who doesn't like it.

Sorry to hear about your vacation becoming a pain in the ass. I hope the trip ends up way better than you expect.

With any luck, you will find a secluded beach with some laid-back vibes and chill out enjoying a cigar or six without busy bodies to harass you.

My experience in Hawaii has always been if you don't bother others and you are slightly off the beaten path (my understanding is that is relatively easy on Big Island), no one will bother you.

Stay away from beach parks and you should be gravy! Aside from the punch to the pocketbook.

My thoughts exactly.  I will not go to DL for the fact that it is not worth it to me.  That is my choice and I will stay away from DL. (Happiest place on earth?  Give me a break!!)

That said, I love Hawaii and I know what I am getting into (cost wise) before I go.  I make the conscience decision to go with the full knowledge that it will cost more than a trip to the Caribbean.  I go to the Caribbean for certain reasons and Hawaii is no different.

Not being able to smoke where I want is a drag but not a deal breaker for me.  I can go without if need be.

Just my opinion.:peace:

At this point I would.

I'm not saying I didn't think it would cost money, you'd have to be an idiot to think a trip to Hawaii would be cheap. I know vacations are not cheap. However, when I go on vacation, I want to be able to do what I want to do. To me, that is the whole point of getting away from the everyday hustle and bustle of life. You're away from it all!

I think I'm finding my larger issue is the wife booked this without my input, she was like "surprise, we're going to Hawaii!"  My response has been less than excited......

Well on the flip side....... you could have had your ‘wife’ talk you into moving to said paradise then promptly lose her marbles and leave less than 2weeks into moving here. That’s my story.

Life can be f^{ked up but it’s how we choose to react to the b.s. that decides whether we are gonna stroke out before our time or not.

I say come out here, enjoy a Mai Tai or 10 and take a load off!

Wow, I'm surprised you stuck it out. Hawaii isn't easy without family around.
