smokum Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 Not cigar related Ladies and Gents from Aussie land but I have a 22 year old daughter who will be studying at Deakin University in Warrnambool and the following semester to Geelong ! Needless to say I am a nervous father. Now I know I come from the Chicago area where it is prudent to be cautious but wondering how these areas of your beautiful country are. She will be on campus but are these larger cities with places for a kid to work ? Safe to walk about in the evenings ? Anything cool I should know ? She is a trusting soul who is studying marine biology . Loves to dive etc.
Jeremy Festa Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 Both are near Melbourne. 3 and 1 hours respectively. Both obviously on the coastline. I don't know much about either area specifically but Melbourne is our most 'European' city, architecturally and culturally. Being from Chicago I would say she is savvy enough to get by walking at night, but I would prefer her not to, and wouldn't want my daughters doing that. They are 3 and 6 years old though. Others from the area will pitch in more. I wouldn't worry too much. Excited for her. Best of luck. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
SignalJoe Posted April 18, 2017 Posted April 18, 2017 Smokum not to make light of your hometown but your description of Chicago as "The New Detroit" is both apt and humorous. 1
Tan1801 Posted April 19, 2017 Posted April 19, 2017 Geelong would have more work options, but I think it would still be possible to find something in Warrnambool. Walking around at night shouldn't be an issue, but every person is different. We've got some members here in the Geelong area, so hopefully they'll chime in. @bolivr works at Deakin in Geelong and will have far better insights than I. 2

smokum Posted April 19, 2017 Author Posted April 19, 2017 Lisa you are always a gem ! She is a good kid and fearless ! A blessing and a curse. Thankfully she will not have transportation while she is away ! She will have to figure out logistics. I on the other hand will have to find out more about tranferring money overseas to her. Another thing that seems kind of a pain is cell phone service. AT&T is NOT shy about overseas capability.. She may have to get a contract in Australia. I am excited for her and God willing maybe I can go there to hang out with her for a week or so. She will be there a whole year. Jeez talk about a dad with anxiety ! Thanks all so far. 1

Time it to come out in October for Havanathon as well would love to have you here and get to meet you finally with the phone she will be able to get a prepaid phone and just pay as she uses the phone a lot easier as all she will need is a sim card probably. Tell her to contact me with anything she wants and I will send you my personal email and phone number via messenger
NJP Posted April 19, 2017 Posted April 19, 2017 Geelong is starting to pick up pace. With it being the short train trip to Melbourne if it's too slow. Now, Warnambool can get quiet, winter especially. Good country/coastal town to get a feel for the quieter Aussie pace. Both places have the late hour Drunk problem but if your still walking the streets at 1am your a ....... Better casual work prospects in Geelong, Warnambool at Holiday time Ok. When at Geelong your day to day will be local but shopping/events/ occasions will be in Melbourne as it's so close. Geelong has s few scummy areas like all places and local rent prices will let you know. Warnambool is cheaper. Geelongs PT is good and linked with Melbourne. Warnambool is country rail and buss so Big gaps in timetables life is easier close to campus. No probs getting around Geelong.
smokum Posted April 20, 2017 Author Posted April 20, 2017 I cant thank you guys enough. Puts my mind at ease. Hopefully I will get out there to visit her, and the FOH folks. Lisa you are of course an angel as always.
MIKA27 Posted April 20, 2017 Posted April 20, 2017 I haven't been to Warnambool in ages as it was way to slow for my liking, some "Country-ish" folk up that way but so close to the Beautiful great ocean road which I love. Flip-side, Geelong has a lot going for it these days, great restaurants, nightlife, well populated but well paced and super close to Melbourne CBD so I'd say Geelong would be perfect for your daughter. 1

smokum Posted April 20, 2017 Author Posted April 20, 2017 Ken she is enrolled at University of Wisconsin and they partner with Deakin for her major. She is used to rednecks being at a Wisconsin school :). She has to attend Deakin. In fact she cant graduate unless she attend Deakin.she has loved marine life since she was a little girl. Its something she loves. Even though I told her its not exactly a highly paid field for the first decade or so after grad ! But she loves it. Its not a money thing with her. Eating will be secondary. Frankly knowing my little girl, if she found something in Aussieland to do intern or workwise she would probably find a way to stay ! She looks to the stars. Great Barrier Reef is her dream ! I would have to sell all my FOH stock and buy a Lear jet. I would bring Bruce on a visit for you. As long as he brings along his diapers for the long flight.
