Punch Double Coronas

Hello. I'm new to the forums but not to cigars. I'd like to ask - is there a difference between Punch Double Coronas from a cabinet vs. in boxes of 25? I've heard that the cabinets have higher quality cigars but I've also heard there isn't that much of a difference.

I am not well initiated enough to have a better answer than an anecdotal one. I've had a box and a cab. Quality seemed about the same. I prefer a cab however for aging medium to long term due to the cigars being on top of each other and the wood being exposed to them directly whereas the box has just one piece of raw cedar as a divider usually. I don't turn my nose up at boxes by any means however, and since they're cancelling cabs of the DC this year, we will all have to make due.

There are no differences in quality of cigars from a dress box to a cab.  Cigars vary from one box to the next and quality can vary for each.  That said, the school of thought is cigars will age better in a cab vs. a dress box being in wood vs.a paper lined dress box.  I don't necessarily find that to be true and would love to challenge an "expert" smoker to try an aged dress box and cab of the same code and assumed "grade" to tell which one came from a cab and which came from the dress box.

Personally I just like the look when you open up a cab of 50, and see the ribbon tied around them. As far as difference in quality,, I can't tell the difference.  Some boxes and some cabs a little better than others. Just my 2 cents take.

There should be no quality or taste difference between the two versions. Even at a time when there were notable differences between DB and Cab versions of the same cigar in many marcas and models (until the early 2000s) the Punch DC seems to have been a cigar that did not ever vary in taste or quality between packaging formats--at least according to MRN. Contrast this with the Hoyo DC which MRN notes did show a difference between DB and cab versions.

Welcome to FoH @Cigarlibrarian. I think the 'romantics' or should I say 'traditionalists' on our forum would favour cabs over dress boxes for resting their stock over time, but it's handy to know that in this case, for the Punch Double Corona, there is no difference.

What I find more interesting is the current availability of Punch Double Corona.

I can't taste a difference, BUT I would point out several differences that might improve LT aging:

1.  The cab is wood, versus dyed paper, 2.  More cigar-to-cigar contact in the Cab bundle,  3.  50 sticks versus 25, and 4. A much smaller opening for the Cab compared to the Dress Box (less air exchange in theory).

I'll be happy to get what I can. Just did the HDM D.C. When it was on the 24/24.  Punch next. Attempting to get all the D.Cs I can as I love the size.

I'd heard the Punch DC cabs were being cancelled and thought I might pick one up (I too like the size - actually a big fan (no pun intended) of the Sancho Panza Sanchos and the Montecristo As - don't even know if they're still in production - haven't seen them in awhile. If you know anything I'd appreciate a heads up).

Any suggestions on others on the cancellation list that would be worth picking up before they go?

The Montecristo A's made a surprise 24:24 appearance just last week so it appears they rolled a couple recently.  Hopefully they come up again soon as they sold out in about three seconds.

Sadly the Sancho Panza Sanchos were deleted in 2006.

Actually, it wouldn't take an expert at all to tell the difference: cigars from a dress box will have a slight box press, whereas cigars from a cab won't.
