if i am doing stuff at home that does not require great concentration or is boring (currently doing my tax), i'll often just leave the tv on in the background.

that dutch? chap, andreas Rieu (think that is him) came on sbs. better than your average elevator music. anyway, it was a concert in melbourne so he finished with a tribute to aussie music. oh how one wishes he did not,

first up, the national anthem. everyone sang their hearts out. but then he replayed it and you could see the confusion in the crowd. obviously he did not realise that few australians even know there is more than one verse and we'd be lucky if one in 100,000 could sing it. but they sang the first verse twice.

then -

banana in pyjamas

tie me kangaroo down (just to remind us that even much beloved celebrities can be appalling pedophiles)

something i'd never heard.

something about gumtrees.

the theme to neighbours.

something requiring bagpipes (which i am not convinced had anything to do with us).

now if that is not a miserable contribution to world culture, lord knows what is.

Am I missing something here, or is Waltzing Matilda missing from the play list?

As for genuine contributions, how about INXS, Midnight Oil, AC/DC?  Or Peter Sculthorpe, if we want to get classical?

And always bear in mind that it could have been worse.  Just think "Kylie Minogue" and consider yourself lucky, lucky, lucky...

Our anthem leaves a lot to be desired.

Top results are songs about a pub that runs out of beer, vegemite, Vietnam and how much desert we have

For the record.....I like Kylie Minogue.

We could do a Kylie background music to one of our vids.....Ken won't mind.

Nick Cave. Started with The Boys Next Door, changed my life with the glorious car crash that was The Birthday Party, put together The Bad Seeds and Grinderman and still, despite living here in Blighty, produces magnificent music. An Aussie truly to be proud of.
And he worked with Kylie cos even a Goth overlord knows talent.

What about Railroad Gin. Good old Brisbane band. My high school music teacher was their manager.

The Go-Betweens were a great band, both the main members were Australian, perfect guitar pop.

I think the Bee Gees count as Australian.

Keith Urban

Easybeats (even if for one great, great song from back in the day).

Easier to cover Tie Me Kangaroo Down, I guess.

I'm assuming you're referring to, "Friday On My Mind", but don't forget, "She's So Fine". Stevie Wright also sang, "Evie (Parts 1, 2 & 3)", another great classic.

You're right on both points. Even though those weren't nearly as well known as Friday on My Mind here in the States, there is video available of him performing them in concert that is well worth taking in.

fronted by carol lloyd, i think? i saw she passed away last week or so. i saw them years ago. they were good. they were the lead-in act for norman gunston.

the saints.

not that i was a punk fan at all, but i was transiting through heathrow about ten years ago and picked up the times. never forget an article they had - i had no idea before it. the article, written by a pom, claimed that punk rock did not originate in the UK but rather, in brisbane with the saints. was news to me. but he went through the entire thing. wish i'd kept the article.

and yes, the cribb island choir was ours as well - known as the bee gees elsewhere. as a tribute, bruce kicked off his brizzy concert on the last tour with stayin alive. a very different version.

Depends. You talking about his solo career after Men At Work?

I prefer him solo. But I don't judge :)
