Recommendations for moderately priced Havana Hotels

Recommended Posts

My father, brother, and I are planning a trip to Havana in May.  Have been doing some research both on the forum as well as online on sites like Trivago looking for recommendations/pricing for hotels in or near Havana.  I have used the search function on this site and have read some good threads but most give recommendations that either don't discuss pricing or are several years ago when it seems hotel costs were a bit cheaper.

We would love to stay at the Hotel Nacional but room costs look to be between $300-$400 per night.  I did a preliminary search and saw that the Hotel Comodoro was around $150 per night.  Read a few threads about the hotel, saw some pics and looks adequate for what we are looking for which is simply a fairly clean room with some hot water that has some nice bar/smoking areas and a pool to sit by or swim if we wish.  We will be spending most of our time traveling, drinking, sight seeing, smoking, etc.  so the room itself is not that important, it just needs to be relatively clean.

Looking to see what other options or recommendations that people have.  Really looking to stay in the $100-$200/night range.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks,

Trevor

Go the Casa Particulares route through various online sites and use all the saved money on cigars. Seriously... $35/room, or you can get fancy and rent a house/condo all by yourself for a bit more.  You can hang out all you want at the Hotel Nacional back patios to enjoy your cigars, music and drinks... then go home to your cheap and clean room.

Yes, Casa Particular. Your money will go much further. Try emailing Rey at Havaning.com, he helped a number of us out last year. The search function on their website is pretty poor, but you can get a good feel for whats available where and work with Rey to find the perfect spot. You can probably find a nice 3 bedroom somewhere in vedado or habana vieja for about what your looking to spend per room.

AirBnB...

Yup, AirBnB/casa is the way to go. If you want to lounge by a pool, go to the Nacional. For 5 CUC, non-guests can have all day access. It's a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.

If you want your outside space with bar and all Comodoro will suit. Let me know if you have questions. We spent some time there last month.

Agree with the Casa particulars if it suits your needs . And agree Rey is the guy.

The one Rey has in Santo Suarez is awesome but beware it is a ways off the beaten path. Rey has better, closer in.

Hey Mike/Dana , sounds like the Comodoro was ok for your visit , it generally gets bad reviews, a package from Canada is very affordable . Would you use it again ?

Cheers , Clinton

Not sure why you are resisting the casa particular concept especially now that Aribnb is in Cuba. You can get an entire house to yourself with 2-3 bedrooms, kitchen for $60 a nice (we just did) and pay with a us credit card.

In the past I have always used bedsincuba.com or another site to reserve a casa particular and had great experiences. Like others have said it is so much better to save your money for the cigar jazz lounge at Melia Cohiba or poolside at the Nacional than waste it on a hotel you won't be happy with anyway.

I will be there in a week and let you know just how simple, easy and great our casa particular was.

Clinton

many years ago I stayed there and it was fine. i am a regular visitor there on my travels as I catch up with friends.

The precinct is actually pretty good. You have the Melia down the road with an excellent Divan and the tourist "drive" next door to sit back, have a cold beer and a cigar and watch the passing parade of disillusioned high end shoppers and Jinteras. You also have Alex in the hotel cigar shop.

The food has always been pretty ordinary but you are Miramar with a plethora of great paladares and bars minutes away.

As dated as the hotel is, I still like the quirky soviet era build/renovation (ongoing sine 2003) on the waterfront which offers a unique feel.
