Orthodox bishop cloistered after bar brawl

21st October, 2016 by Rupert Millar

A Ukrainian Orthodox archbishop has apparently been sent to a monastery after getting involved in a bar fight.

archbishop-mstyslavArchbishop Mstyslav (pictured) is a prelate of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church, the smallest of the Ukraine’s three Orthodoxies.

According to the BBC, Mstyslav, archbishop of Ternopil and Podillya, was with several other clergymen in a bar in Ternopil when the fight erupted sometime last week.

CCTV footage shows the clergymen dancing with various women before the mood turns sour as other non-clerical patrons of the bar move in. Fists eventually start flying and military policemen arrive to break up the melee.

The Ukrainian channel’s 1+1 TV news reported the event on 16 October and included some footage of the fracas.

Archbishop Mstyslav has reportedly denied any involvement but the head of the church, Metropolitan Makariy has issued a statement in which he said: “I, as the church head, would like to apologise to the UAOC and all Ukrainian believers for the actions of the clergymen.”

The church leaders seem particularly annoyed that Archbishop Mstyslav and the other priests held their ultimately eventful outing on one of the church’s feast days, likely the Protection of Our Most Holy Lady the Mother of God and Ever-Virgin Mary on 14 October, which is meant to be a day of fasting.

All of the priests involved in the incident have been suspended from their pastoral duties pending an investigation and Archbishop Mstyslav has been confined to a monastery for a month to “repent” and no doubt reflect.

No man is above a good bar brawl. Besides...he's clearly a wrestler...look at that cauliflower ear.

downunder, the cauliflower ear is the sign of a rugby player, most likely from the front row.

You know...I didn't even consider that. Well that would make more sense I suppose. Good story.

Love the news coverage, especially the musical enhancement, worth a watch. Big ass hairy bloke goes to a party at a bar, danced, got up close and personal with some ladieees, got involved in a fight and tried to stop it. Pretty standard for the average Joe, only problem is that he's an arch-bleeding-bishop and therefore not allowed. his God said so. Well, his boss said so, interpreting on behalf of the god in question. All religion is opinion, IMHO.
(Ken, you can sneak in a "like" if you want - they can't prove which bit of the above you liked )

Well, he was not caught at a buffet now was he?

Feast Day? A day of Fasting?   now the Church cannot make up its mind...........

"Protection of Our Most Holy Lady the Mother of God and Ever-Virgin Mary"............don't get me started............

MY PICK for the longest name for a religious holiday EVER.........

* George C. Scott's "PATTON" has been coming on the premium cable stations a good bit, and I'd read that he'd had his nose broken five (5) times - all in bar room brawls.

Uh - maybe I should re-clarify that:  It was George C. Scott who had his nose broken that many times. The way I have it, it could be misconstrued that I was talking about Patton, himself!
