This is a regular in my rotation. I enjoy one every morning with coffee. It seems as thought for the past 6 months or so the quality has dropped. I'm finding inconsistent burn and roll, varied flavors, etc.

Is it just me? frown.gif

I can't say I have noticed anything, but then again I don't smoke them regularly enough to get through multiple boxes. Are you smoking from the same box, or comparing sticks with the same amount of age on them?

Posted

This is from several boxes all of the more recent vintage, stored like I've always stored them. I usually smoke from multiple boxes.

I just recently purchased my first box and have smoked a few to fresh to be able to compare to what they will be like aged. Curious as to what flavors you are getting JY0? I have to admit I have found them to less than stellar.

I've always found they need a lot of time. Pretty rough up to 5 years and legs to go much farther.

I know what you guys are saying about age. I buy a lot of these for that reason. I sample the more recent boxes before I tuck them away.

What I'm saying is that recently I am seeing more inconsistencies than I've seen in the past in newer production boxes.

I can, but it is not likely exactly what you were asking.

I actually thought that the PLPC was very good when reintroduced, I cannot remember the year, I believe '03. Those cigars, as well as the cigars before they were discontinued were very good.

While I still buy the PLPC, it has been another cigar that has fallen fate to the Tabacuba practice of overproduction at the cost of quality. It is not that every cigar is now below par, but the variation in the sticks, not as in profile, but in overall smoking experience has somewhat declined.

Now in fairness, I am rating cigars that have run from '03 to '08 and one could make a more contemporary assessment of newer crops that could be more accurate to those years. Overall, from '03 to '08 I have seen the decline.

I don't really know that it is fair to judge cigars this way, while I do it all the time, due to the fact that there are likely ebbs and flows that cause these production problems (as I see them) that may be righted in short order. My experience could be a matter of chance and based on the boxes, and the time of year that the cigars were actually produced. I will never know.

I would say that there are likely fewer 'global trends' than what many of us experience as individual trends. Not all of us will agree on trends and therefore the argument that there is in fact no trend, is worth consideration.

When it comes to trends, I suppose I trust my own palate first, then would have to rely on someone like our host whose fingers run over 10's or 100's of thousands of cigars. Someone has to be closer to the market than I am really, to truly accurately assess trends!

Very well said Piggy. The last great PLPC's for me were '08 boxes. I miss them and wish that I had stocked up.

I've never had one but recently bought a cab. If I had seen this post I would have never pulled the trigger. Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

I wouldn't worry - I'm new to them compared to the other guys posting on the thread I've been enjoying them (very recent production). You will make your own opinion when you eventually smoke one. I have a cab from '14 which have improved each time I dip in to try one.

All I know is I love the EML FEB 14s I'm currently smoking and would welcome another cab.

... I would like to comment on this mate, if you don't mind.

You should not let others do your tasting for you. The Lord gave you a mind and with it an opinion. You did no wrong as I see it by attempting to expand your horizons in trying different cigars. Now, if you know already that you don't like petit coronas, then buying 50 of them might have been a mistake, but reading a few posts and assessing your actions of buying one cab and regretting it, not even having tried the cigars is a mistake!

My advice to you would be to try cigars for yourself and assess your own cigars and own tastes without too much influence from others.

I cannot speak for others, but my comments were never designed to elicit this type of response!

There is a response above where a member states that he has smoked 500 of them and never had a bad one! Why not choose to believe him instead?

Happy smoking. -Piggy

Very good points you make. Thanks for sharing this bit of knowledge. But you are so right. Why didn't I choose the other prespective? Perhaps I should have. I'll be thinking about your words of wisdom as I continue in my awesome journey of enjoying my cigars.

No worries, it's still an awesome cigar. I am still buying them and have one almost every day.

Overall quality has taken a dip these past 6 months. You have seen I have cleared a fair few cabs. The problem hasn't been so much construction but wrapper quality.

It hasn't been that bad....more that we are use to seeing plenty of brilliant cabs and now they are mostly "good" with few "briliant".

I smoke a lot of PLPC. The flavour is still excellent.

Perfect description of what I was trying poorly to say, thank you Rob :+)

I didn't mean to disparage the PLPC. The wrappers are all over the place within the cab. I've had a couple of cigars that also varied light and dark. I should have taken a picture.

That said, I continue to buy them for now and later and I enjoy one every, single day. It is still my favorite cigar in the catalogue.

I recently bought a cab from our host and noticed that the color of the wrapper is very different than any other cuban cigar. It has almost a greenish color to them? Is this normal for this cigar?

08 seemed a low point. The 13s I have are very nice. Too young, of course, but show good promise. I've never had one older than 05 or so, so I have no experience with the older set.
