**Like Fugu said; don't argue with him. And like quite a few others previously said; don't give him anymore smokes.

Do be a gentleman about it, but by the same token, don't be taken advantage of. And...don't waste your time with such a boorish ass. He knows damn well that he's insulting you. Those are not inexpensive yard gar sticks. IMHO, don't offer any more cigars. Period. If he's foolish enough to mention it, simply state that YOU do enjoy your cigars and there is no sense in wasting them since they are really not that guy's thing. Leave it at that and offer no apologies. It may be uncomfortable, but the message will get through. Nothing worse than an old fart (or a young one for that matter) being an 'expert' on all things and tell everyone around what they are doing wrong. Let him buy his own.

Mate?

It literally says "Rough-Housing" in your profile's 'Interests.'

As such, you should stand by your statement, and bash that old codger in the face.

He is old, and he is sure to go down like a lead ballon.

Not only that, if he actually holds great knowledge and experience, he will probably respect you more for honouring the old ways.

And will agree with everything you say moving forward.

Godspeed.

This is the most hilarious, witty, and well thought out response I've ever received in any forum ever. Kudos for the Godspeed add at the end as well. You've made an otherwise awful day into a wholehearted belly laugh for the long ride home. Thank you!

I've been burning up Monte 2's for 45 years, one of my favorite cigars?

Yes, today's tobacco doesn't usually have the strength it did in the past, but it's still gorgeous tobacco and I'm very happy to smoke it.

Even happier if someone shares a cigar with me.

Pistols at dawn.

Dear Mods,

How do you go about liking something twice?

And the winner!

no, no, no, no.

very simple.

next time he says anything that may be inferred in any way as demeaning to you and/or your cigars in comparison with the ones he used to smoke, just say "well you must be delighted to finally have the opportunity to smoke a genuine Cuban".

My off the cuff response is "why worry about it?"

But to go a little deeper I guess your response should really be based on why you share with him. Are you doing it just to be friendly? Are you being charitable because he likes cigars but can't afford them? Are you doing it in the hopes of building his opinion of you? Are you doing it because the rest of the crew/group shares amongst each other? Are you doing it to try and impress people?

If it's the first two shrug it off or give him sh*t back and keep on sharing if you want. Any of the other reasons....

I genuinely believe the reason I share my cigars with anyone lately is to give them a little extra nicety they might not normally have had. The person of whom I speak has always been a bit of what everyone would call "old school." Fighting some of the new ways.

I work in a very competitive almost "boiler room" type atmosphere (but we are trying to remedy this) and a there is quite a lot of brashness, bravado, politicking and hustling going on all the time. It's a pressure cooker kind of job where you want to run away every day, but love to come back the next day and dive back in. I love it and hate it at the same time.

I've shared some of these insights and even some of the funny responses. On the flip side of the coin he has shared some good sticks with me and has complimented on a fair amount of some other cigars I've given. I am not angry about it just a bit let down I guess. However I'm now ok with the idea that tastes change, and cigars change.

Tonight on my drive home I had a Monte 2 (not from here) and thought about what he was saying and maybe just maybe there's some truth hanging around this. It didn't knock my socks off, but it was still a nice smoke. Maybe not like the old ones, but still good and we're very lucky to have the means to have the opportunity to make these kind of observations. 1st world problems...woe is me my Monte 2 is a little off, maybe it needs some more down time.
