Regional Editions or Limitadas

Recommended Posts

I have always stuck to the original lines and haven't ventured out into the RE's or Limitadas. Is one made with more quality than the other? What was your favorite RE or Limitada? Im trying to understand the releases - Is there somewhere that explains when they come out and how many boxes are made etc. (is there a set standard of what RE or limitada comes out)?

I found this...

On a side note to what the others posted, I think it's a personal choice as to if they are worth it. I've had some that don't do much for me, and others that are beyond delicious. Most recently and still available the Boli EL 2014 and Party EL 2014.

A lot of the RE cigars seem to be decent to good. I've had my share of them and, for the most part, you can get regular production stuff that's better and without the "oh my god it's a Regional!" price gouge. The main differentiator is that they're all unique sizes to the marca and you have to be in that particular region to get them (or buy on secondary market).

Difference can come into play when it's something that catches your fancy: I LOVE petit robos and quite a few of the RE are in that range. Again, the price point can make you cringe since HSA does price accordingly and then secondary market sellers will double or triple the price.

I've tended to avoid the Limited Editions mostly. I don't want to fall in love with a cigar that is only available in limited numbers. Of course, this means I miss out on the occasional great smoke. But I think there are enough amazing 'regular production' cigars to keep me happy. Mind you, I still get tempted to try some of them from time to time. Lately I have been wanting to try the Diplomaticos Regional release for Cuba - but that's mostly because of the scarcity of Diplomaticos these days. I could never be tempted by a LE for a brand like RyJ or Partagas, given the huge range and variety that these brands already have.

I have not tried RE at all, so last week I bought 8 different boxes of REs ( Bushido, Platino, Parisio, Sabrosos, Pacifico, Belicosos Extra etc etc). They are all enroute.

I can tell you one thing so far with certainty, it was a rather "Expensivos"!!

Regards.

The Hoyo Short Pyramid is one of the great LEs in my book. I find it rich and elegant, a bit like the Pyramid from 2003. And reasonably priced, at least at the time of release.

I've found myself buying some of the LE's over the past 12 months while I've been travelling for work, purely because they come in boxes of 10 which is more convenient. The Cohiba Robustos Supremos were fantastic.

ELs have been disappointing for me. I bought a box of the new Club Allones, but beyond that, the ones I have tried taste more Nicaraguan than Cuban. The HU Mag 48 were particularly awful (although I know some like them).

REs, on the other hand, can be quite good, provided you like the brand and vitola they are offered in (and you can find them!) The PL Robustos Asia from several years back were out of this world for me. I'd pay Cohiba prices to get a box of those on the reg.

This is why I avoid them now. The two that taught me that lesson was the Hoyo short pyramid LE and the RA petit belicoso RE. LOVE the Hoyo but it's harder to find and the RA can still be found but at almost triple what I paid for my original box. I think if I were in a position to be able to buy 10 boxes at a time my opinion would be different.

That's part of the fun for me, when you treasure the last sticks of a long gone EL or ER. When they're gone theire gone. And they allow you to keep fond memories of them.

And - you can have the very same effect with reg production of glorious production years.
