Ken Gargett Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 feeling sorry for nsw for any reason is a bit like feeling sorry for the dallas cowboys or man U but in this case... i can't even begin to understand what might be behind this. the world has gone completely box of frogs. NSW Police question Sydney restaurant 10 William Street over its wine list A Sydney restaurant has been questioned by NSW Police over its "unsavoury" and "antisocial" wine list. The restaurant, 10 William Street in Paddington, was advertising "wine by the glass" on its blackboard when NSW Police entered the small Italian-style bar on Saturday night. Police told the venue's manager that they were concerned the blackboard was too close to the front of the terrace-turned-candlelit bar and could encourage heavy drinking. Diners at the 10 William St restaurant. Photo: Christopher Perace Police also raised concerns about a sign on the front of the restaurant advertising wine without additives as "free wine" said the restaurant's owner, Giovanni Paradiso. "So according to the NSW POLICE FORCE our blackboard with what we are pouring by the glass is promoting unsavoury antisocial behaviour," Mr Paradiso wrote on photo-sharing site Instagram on Saturday night. "SYDNEY WHAT THE F--- IS HAPPENING". The offending wine list (left). Photo: Domino Postiglione Mr Paradiso, who also co-owns popular Italian eatery Fratelli Paradiso in Potts Point, was also told by police that the pro-organic wine graffiti he had drawn on his own balcony should be removed. The post was greeted with outrage from Sydney's hospitality community. More than a hundred comments from chefs and bartenders labelled the police intervention as "disgraceful", "embarrassing", and "lunacy". A glass of "antisocial" wine? Photo: James Alcock "Sydney to Melbourne: 'It's over. We give up you can have the better city we'll just have the police state'," wrote frustrated customer Matt Jouuett on the restaurant's Facebook page. The incident comes amid growing concerns that the state's lockout laws, designed to target alcohol-fuelled violence, have dampened Sydney's once-vibrant night-life. On Saturday the NSW government announced a one year extension of the ban on all new pub and club licences in Kings Cross and Sydney's centre. Mr Abrosino told food website Broadsheet that confusion about licensing regulations had generated widespread resentment in the industry. Restaurant owner Giovanni Paradiso: "So according to. NSW POLICE FORCE our blackboard with what we are pouring by the glass is promoting unsavoury antisocial behaviour SYDNEY WHAT THE F--- IS HAPPENING"Photo: Instagram gio_paradiso "There's an undercurrent of disappointment amongst venue owners There seems to be a real confusion of drinking and dining [and] when you can trade. We're very, very frustrated. None of us have had any trouble. The police are painting us all with one brush," he said. A NSW Police spokesman confirmed that police had attended 10 William Street on Saturday night during an operation that targeted alcohol-related violence, antisocial behaviour and compliance in 155 businesses across central Sydney. "It is common for police to provide advice to licensees regarding potential licensing breaches or issues during business inspections," the spokesman said.
Fuzz AI Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 That's it, I've had it. They don't you live, they don't let you breathe. I am now seriously considering buying my own island off the east coast, then will secede from Australia.

BigRay023 Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 Seriously. They don't have anything better or more important to do? Just seems like the leash is being reigned in tighter and tighter wherever you look. Bizarre times we live in.
Popular Post Fuzz AI Posted February 7, 2016 Popular Post Posted February 7, 2016 Argh! Bugger it! Then I'm buying an old container ship and parking just outside of Australian Territorial waters. I'm gonna create my own wonderland with cigars, hookers and Blackjack... as a matter of fact, forget the cigars and Blackjack! 5
MIKA27 Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 Why do Police focus on restaurants and bars for antisocial alcohol fuelled violence and perhaps actually get off their FREE MACCAS fat arses and do some real policing. Sydney to Melbourne or Melbourne to Sydney, it doesn't matter, I think both are POLICE NANNY states, but not so much as seeing actual police patrolling but rather all automated rubbish like Speed and point to point cameras etc. I haven't seen a cop on foot for a very long time nor are they focusing much on the real problems, but petty stuff like restaurant signs. The restaurants should tell them to P*SS OFF as it is a private venue, so the Police really can't do much without justified reason or a crime being committed.
Ribeye Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 Seriously. They don't have anything better or more important to do? Sure they do, but its easier to hassle the law abiding citizens than it is to catch crooks......Plus, if they hassle you, they are virtually assured of going home safe and getting to their retirement years.
thecrowder Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 Isn't promoting drinking lots of wine actually promoting social behavior? I struggle to understand how wine drinking could be considered "antisocial"
JohnS Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 New South Wales...the great Nanny state of Australia!

jwr0201 Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 If this was in New York or Chicago a couple of decades ago, this kind of harassment would likely be due to the business owner not paying off the cops to be 'protected'. Sorry to see this happening to you all. What are the smoking laws like there? Here in the states, our 'representatives' are killing us with their anti-smoking regulations. Fortunately, here in Florida, we can still smoke cigars pretty much anywhere outdoors and in most bars and pubs. I understand in the northeast, one cannot even have a cigar in a public park!

Most Australian states have smoking laws now like the Northeast. Until July 2015, you could dine and smoke at public places in New South Wales, now you can only smoke, but not eat, in designated areas. Yes, you'd be lucky to be able to smoke in a park.
Duxnutz Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 I think I'm gonna start my own Sydney chapter of the Temperence League.
Nrengle Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 This is just stupid. When we were down there last year on Motley we got in trouble at the pub across from the JW I think it was for not having a glass of water every two beers. When one of my guys started pouring glasses of water and we treated it as a shooter we got kicked out. We go back to the bar on the rocks (oldest bar in Australia, can't remember the name), they were like WTF is wrong with them. We'lol gladly take your money and keep pouring...
peanutpete Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 I think this is scary If they keep treating adults like children in another generation or so we will have bunch of unthinking adults who are so dumbed down they will be unable to make any decisions for them self and that is when civilisation end

If it was a triangular shaped pub on the corner, that'd be The Australian Hotel. It is one of the oldest pubs in Australia. The building has pretty much stayed the same for over 100 years.

They too, our money when other places were being all PC/nanny state. Will return the next time I'm in Australia.
MooseAMuffin Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Crazy story. Its duscouraging to know that instances like these are going on all over the place. Their is a current push in the US to pretty much ban smoking in all forms. And if I remember correctly, there is some bill where the government will actually be able to determine if something is indeed "a cigar" just based on its price. They also have something in there about manufacturers having to provide tobacco samples for some government agency to test and regulate. I wish they'd just say "listen, smoking and drinking can cause problems both mentally and physically so use at your own risk. Don't commit crimes while enjoying them and we'll leave you alone." Seems easy enough to me.
