The snake was too worried about the dog. From what I saw the dog was chasing it and the snake took a path that took him right under that guys chair. Thankfully it seemed like it had no interest in stopping to bite at the time. Lucky for both of them.

Agreed.....but if the bloke moved his foot at the wrong moment....nosmilies.gif

That wasn't a large brown. I have seen them at near six feet long. However even as juveniles (at a foot length), they have the agression and the poison to have you pushing up daisies unless you can get a compression bandage on and antivenin within the hour. Not a huge problem in a built up area/town/city. However if bitten when camping, bush walking then it is a race against the clock.

We have Bark Scorpions in my part of the world. They are ugly mothers with a painful sting, but unless allergic are more of a nuisance. The sheer amount of different deadly critters in Australia is truly amazing.

Close call indeed - Lucky he wasn't moving otherwise he'd have been bitten for sure.

Used to see a lot of these, as Rob said, much larger and longer, when we camped in Gippsland.

Pretty creepy when they sneak up on you. I was once fishing and my dad whispered at me not to make any sudden movement. I looked down to my right and sure enough, a large Eastern Brown snake slithering past.

I was 15 or so at the time so I learnt quickly to keep eyes forward and around when ones walking about and or camping in the bush. Even Urban areas have snakes at times..

i saw this yesterday as well, noticed the two shooaways first and then had the biggest freak out seeing the dog barking and chasing that snake.

Seen some browns in the bush but have not seen any in the home yet (knock on wood) but u can bet any furniture within reach will be used with extreme prejudice. Finding one in the home just add's that BONUS level fear factor.

Are there many deaths in oz due to brown snakes?

Not many at all these days. Antivenom is well stocked and readily available in most parts of Oz.

Different story for animals. Many a good dog and horse has been lost due to a bite.

The little bugger was looking for a nice warm, dark crevice to hide in, but the dude moved. Seriously, next time warn a fella when there is gonna be a close up of plumber's crack! moon.gif

In all seriousness, getting bit by a juvenile snake is worse than getting bitten by an adult. A juvenile's venom is just as potent as an adult's, and they don't hold back. An adult may give you a dry bite or just a little venom, but a juvenile will pump into you their whole load. When you're young and small, you gotta make sure the thing you bit is dead.

Yep from birth they are ready to go you can be bitten and killed by a baby snake....if that snake was cornered ..different storey, would have nailed that dog no problem ...anti venom at a vet starts from around 1k a shot . . I live next door to a dentist and last he year spent over 10k on one bite. It was a cat ..it survived ...part of the family I guess.

The Eastern Brown Snake may be any shade of brown but can also be grey or black.

But always cranky.

Good thing for the Shoo Aways, had the snake scared.

Your storys make our Minnesota mosquitos not so bad. That's about the most dangerous thing we have.
