How pathetic is this?

I'm out here on the deck working, enjoying the pleasant autumn day and smoking. Come to find that my big table jet lighter's sparker is kaput. So to light my cigars and to touch up I hit the gas, light my lighter with a Bic barbecue match then light my cigar with it.

How far have you gone to keep using a lighter you like or to light a cigar?

I use the Alec Bradley table lighter. I love it. never once has the ignition worked. So I use my never fail xikar to light the table lighter.

Of course in a pinch I've used the oven.

Every week several of us convene for a herf. Many times my friends, whom all have lighters I gave them, ask "who's got a lighter?"

I throw them a kitchen match and wait for the whining to begin..........

Proves that if you help a sucker out, you will never be off the hook..........

Same happens with cutters.I have given away a dozen cutters, and I am tired of lending out mine,so I hand out a cheapie that only cuts a thin slice since it has a plastic back on it.

I say "if you're going to smoke like a beginner,use a beginner's cutter"..............

I'm able to source cheap ($5.99) small butane lighters and larger ($9.99) size butane lighter at my local

food chain store in my town. I love these cheap lighters. If I break them or loose them no problem.

An added benefit is the area that holds the fluid can be seen 360 degrees around because this area has a slight

color tint, red, orange, green,..you get it. Nothing worse than not knowing how much fluid one has in the lighter.

I refuse to buy any lighter where I can't see or it is almost impossible to see the fluid.

The older I get, the less impatient I am with fussy/crappy lighters. I mostly use one of the $3 torches I bought a while ago. They all work, and I can see the fuel level. I tossed the table top torch that started leaking. When I'm at home, I mostly stick to flint lighters because they work(pipe lighters and IM Coronas). I hardly use my $450 palladium DuPont because I don't want to buy the refills, and I haven't purchased an adapter yet. On one of the few occasions I used it, my friend dropped it on the concrete sidewalk. It has a large chip in it, and I wonder why I even bought it. I hardly use the 2 1492 lighters with the Vector/Zippo inserts. I hate the small tanks. I had to fiddle with the electrodes when they were new, just so they could friggin light at all. I've used stoves (gas and electric), propane heaters, old car cigarettes lighters, and other stuff to light cigars. The same goes for cutting. I use whatever is handy and sharp. When on the road, I often grab a box knife out of the tool bag. It works just as well as any $100 cutter. Unless I have a a lot of dedicated time to lounge around, I try not to get too fussy.

My faithful travel lighters are a couple of refillable flick light type soft flames I got at a cigar lounge. Keep on keeping on, but nothing worse than when you get a chance to light up and your huddled in the corner trying to control the flame!!!

That's not pathetic, that's industrious! If anyone gives you ****, just tell them it's a safety lighter!

I feel better already!

I agree. Although they do work quite well. I keep one in my messenger pack so I'm never without but you're right...they don't have much life.

On a job years ago I was locked into a department store overnight with a crew which was servicing the AC. There was one cigarette smoker and he forgot his lighter. In the plant room there was bench grinder. He put a bolt into a vise grip, ground it 'til it was red hot, then lit his smoke off it. Quite inventive.
