rmill3r Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 First of all, are Romeo y Julieta Exhibicion No. 3s still widely available? I feel like I rarely see them from the sources I look to (including our host), but I see plenty of love and availability for the No. 4s. I bought a box of Ex No. 4s after trying about two or three of them. They are absolutely delicious. Just fantastic across the board, but I would really like to try a No. 3 now. I like the corona gorda size better than the hermosa no. 4, so I feel like the No. 3 will be more up to speed for my tastes, but does anyone know if there are major differences between the two cigars other than size? Is it just the same blend but different vitola, or are there major differences between the RyJ Ex No. 3 and Ex No. 4?
Smallclub Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 The blend is very similar but in my experience the No.4 is much better. To me the No3 has less complexity, less intensity, less character, etc. And the corona gorda is my favorite size, then if the 2 cigars were on par I'd always purchase the No.3. 1
cpmurrin Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 I bought some from Rob in May and they look good. Have been letting them sit but they don't look as wild as the #4s. On looks, I'd agree with Smallclub but am looking forward to finding out for myself
NSXCIGAR Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 There's always been a difference in taste between the Ex 3 & Ex 4. The Ex 4 is generally considered the superior vitola with the Ex 3 lacking in complexity. It's never been nearly as popular and production has been rather limited for many years. I believe the Ex 3 may have been slightly stronger at one point but I don't believe that to really be the case anymore unless someone can confirm that for recent production. I'd say unless you just love the Corona Gorda size and hate the Robusto, stick with the Ex 4. There's nothing the Ex 3 can provide that the Ex 4 doesn't, especially recent Ex 4 production.

That's exactly what I was told in the early 2000's by experienced smokers and knowledgeable tobacconists… but MRN wrote virtually the opposite…
ElPuro Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 Is it a requirement to have the Rosado wrappers to get that cherry flavor?
cpmurrin Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 In my experience, they need the Rosado to get the cherry taste
Smallclub Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 Is it a requirement to have the Rosado wrappers to get that cherry flavor? Don't be fixated on the cherry flavour. I have smoked hundreds of Exhib4 during the last 12 years and I've never experienced a taste that I could qualify as "cherry". Must be a cultural thing - my idea of cherry (and I have a superb cherry tree in my garden) is different than the anglo saxon 's idea of cherry… Anyway, this cigar definitely tastes better with the rosado wrapper, that's for sure!
NSXCIGAR Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 That's exactly what I was told in the early 2000's by experienced smokers and knowledgeable tobacconists… but MRN wrote virtually the opposite… On the contrary, MRN writes on pg. 419 of the July 2005 ed., "Some people might prefer the Ex 3 instead [of the Ex 4], which is stronger, more woody and "punchy". I, on the other hand, have disagreed with this assessment at least since the late 90s. Prior to 98, both the Ex 3 and Ex 4 were tremendous smokes, the Ex 4 even becoming my everyday cigar. Never smoked cigars like that since. Tangy citrus & wood background with a tropical fruit explosion, in perfect balance. I'll never forget them. But as you've noted I had also heard that around 2000 Ex 3 had increased in strength. I never experienced this, but I never smoked more than one or two Ex 3 or Ex 4 per year from around 1999 to 2013 as the quality of RyJ was generally very poor during that time. I'd be very interested in trying recent Ex 3 production however considering the recent high quality of Ex 4 and RyJ in general since 2013.

Certainly not cherry fruit I'd agree. The famous cherry what you get in the short Churchills I'd say is more of a cherry kirsch/cherry flavouring you get in drinks. Most Anglo Saxons I'd say experience this in cherry fizzy drinks or sweets growing up. It doesn't really have anything in common with real cherries when I think about it!
CaptainQuintero Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 The ex 3 was on the released deletion list that was banded about 2 years or so ago, but if it became a reality who knows.

The famous cherry what you get in the short Churchills I'd say is more of a cherry kirsch/cherry flavouring you get in drinks. Exactly. The Chills were always known for the "deeper" fruit flavor, often described as cherry, and were fairly strong and very rich. The Ex 4 had a "lighter" fruit flavor which I would describe as "tropical" fruit, but man, it was really like eating a bowl of guava and mango. At least that's how they used to be. I think the Ex 4 has gravitated a bit towards those deeper fruit notes these last few years. But I'll take it, considering the turds RyJ was cranking out for a decade.

Turds usually have aroma at least! I'm just happy it's well on its way to being turned around
ElPuro Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 Well, I snagged some PSP ryj Churchills in the recent 24:24 (paid up a bit for those!) and have a box of 4s on the way though those were a blind buy. Asked the merchant to get me a box with the Rosado wrappers but we shall see....
kuma Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 I also have never tasted cherry in either Ex. #4 or the Short Churchills. I would really like to be able to sense / taste that flavor. It is not for lack of what I buy (our hosts) so the quality is there just might not be my time. Somewhat like hitting the "lotto" I think.
SurpriseMVP Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 The ex 3 was on the released deletion list that was banded about 2 years or so ago, but if it became a reality who knows.I have not seen any recent production ex3, but they were around in 2013 Mike 1
ElPuro Posted October 5, 2015 Posted October 5, 2015 I had a bit of cherry in a punch punch once. It was interesting for sure. I'd like to revisit to make sure I am not going nuts!
