Do you know a cigar friendly accommodation in Canada or Alaska where I can see the aurora borealis? I know a glasshouse style cigar lounge in the middle of nowhere is most unlikely to find. But perhaps there is a hotel/lodge with an all-weather cigar terrace or a cigar friendly private hot tub?

I have watched them whilst smoking a cigar in a work camp just south of Fort Mac a few times. A site to behold for sure. You may need to get a job in the oilfields or just take a seat in the middle of nowhere. Trust me there is a lot of middles of nowheres in northeren Canada.

I love when a good solar flare and the weather timing meets up just right. We get beautiful shows and when in the mountains, it just seems to be amplified.

Sorry, I can't help with a lodge, as I always watch from a campsite or my truck

If you end up in Anchorage, Fairbanks, or some small village or town in central Alaska, then you will likely have limited options. I do not think there are any lounges with a view. Your best bet is usually to be outside of the city a little to see the best light shows. It will probably be very cold and dry during prime viewing times. If you cannot find a traditional location to fulfill this dream of yours, then I can offer a few alternatives:

1. rent a car and park somewhere with the engine running (heat) and smoke in the rental car. You will probably have to pay extra fee for smoking in the rental car if they can smell it when you return it.

2. Find a hotel room or lodge that allows smoking and request a room with windows facing north.

3. Hire someone to take you on a northern lights tour and camp outside with a good fire.

4. Call a cigar shop in the area that you are thinking about visiting (if there is one) and ask for their advice.

If you go to Fairbanks make sure you check out the http://www.icealaska.com/en/digital-media/sculpture-walk-through/2014/multi-block-walk-2014.html World Ice Art Championships. You might actually find it as cool or better than the northern lights.

Whatever you do, make sure you don't whistle at the Aurora Borealis.

There isn't a cigar friendly place in Canada! Like polar bears they are a dying breed! But northern Ontario is awesome!!! Just fly in fishing somewhere and never leave!

Mate, I don´t wanna spoil your plan and trip but I have to say December is far from the best month to catch northern lights in Iceland. It´s truly the darkest month but the weather is just...well lets face it crap. 99% of the time. Nothing is impossible of course but still Sep, Oct, Mar and Apr just sounds better for that reason. However Dec has lot more to offer than Auroras...

As for cigars...bring your own. In town...well...poor selection of basics. Mostly in bad quality. And/or fakes. There were few good years when it seemed like I had a huge effect on the best stores...but it is gone. On top of everything its expensive. Not a cigar friendly country by any measures.

If you need any info about the country or trip advice just PM me.

...and I will be ready to catch up for a smoke man. (public areas are non smoking, few cold open shelters (heated but...)

no info on big hotels though ,never been to any, hahaha...

The only cigar friendly hotel I know of in Canada is the Stoney Nakota Resort, but rooms are east & west facing, not north.

Cheers for the tip! I've got 3 weeks off from Dec 1 to Dec 22... In October i'll be at Havanathon.

Never been to Iceland before, so the lights are just an added bonus, if i see em i see em... Besides, i like cold weather. Something different to the boiling hot weather here usually :P Will definitely let you know closer to the time when i'll be there and we can arrange a smoke up party.gifok.gif

Oddly enough, the bonus of tonight cigar on the deck featured the most remarkable Northern lights show I've seen in some time! The sky was dancing like smoke from a fire. Some green colors but mostly ghostly white. At times the whole visible sky was "moving."

A true treat!
