mygar Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 I have recently cut a bunch of weight and am in pretty good shape. I am going to Cancun for a couple weeks. Of course, i will bring my own cigars (thats ok isnt it? Lol). Anyway, i am looking for some low cal, low sugar drink ideas for pairing with cigars. I am leaning towards liqours with tonic water or no cal sodas. One caveat is i cant stomach the taste of too much hard liqour Haha. Any ideas? I will be staying at an all inclusive resort and drinks are included in costs. I also am open to purchasing bottles locally as well if resort does not have good liqour choices. Thx!
paulF Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 Irish stouts or porters are my go to when trying to behave calorie wise. They go extremely well with cigars too (to my taste buds at least!)
mygar Posted May 11, 2015 Author Posted May 11, 2015 Those are good... high on the calorie side though i think.
JohnS Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 I would consider basic combinations of diet coke and rum or diet coke and bourbon as your main drinks, then limit yourself to one or two exclusive cocktails on the side.
paulF Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 Those are good... high on the calorie side though i think. Not compared to other beers i believe. Say 350ml of Guinness is only around 125 cals so not much really compared to pale ales and so on. So around 2 litres of guinness for example would be around 750 cals which is not that bad really if you control what you eat with it or afterwards because that's usually the biggest issue with drinking. Red dry wine might be ok too but don't think it goes well with Cigars(at least to my mind) It's not the calories from alcohol that's usually the issue, its mostly what you eat with it due to cravings because the moment you introduce alcohol to your body,it starts breaking it down immediately while storing the foods you're having because it considers alcohol as a poison so food that goes with the alcohol gets stored(fat) while the body is busy breaking down the alcohol... 1
Overproof Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 It's only a couple of weeks though, Enjoy a few drinks of whatever takes your fancy. Moderation...If that's even possible. You could try a couple of Gin and tonics, some iced water with lemon or lime, make ice tea with artificial sweetener.
MIKA27 Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 I'd think almost EVERY alcoholic drink contains sugar. Unsure if there is a Non Calorie type of beverage? Maybe some basic mixers like Vodka and Orange. Orange is quite nice with a number of cigars.
Fuzz Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 Vodka has anywhere between 60-85 calories per oz, depending on proof. Orange juice has about 16 calories per oz. A mojito has about 214 calories, whereas a gin and tonic is about 94 calories.
Fuzz Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 Diet tonic would be far lower. A bottle of Schweppes tonic water is about 130 calories per 8 oz. Their diet tonic water has zero calories.

Interesting... thought the cals would be higher. Also agree about cravings for food... always get hungry with alcohol. If i want a beer i will keep these in mind.

Yes thats true... but i definitely plan on living it up now and then haha..thought i could limit the damage a little! I'd think almost EVERY alcoholic drink contains sugar. I think vodka and citrus or pomegranite seltzer sounds good. Cool and refreshing. Thanks! 1

Dispence Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 Vodka/club soda with a Lemon or lime. Super low-cal, and pretty much inert with any cigar.
Bulldog4 Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 if your looking for simple vodka with soda water and a lime wedge. or any alcohol straight works a 1oz shot of vodka or gin is around 90cals i believe
saintsmokealot Posted May 11, 2015 Posted May 11, 2015 At least once go to Cancun's LCDH and splurge on a mojito. You won't be disappointed. It's all about moderation.

They will have fresh limes etc. May have to purchase better liquor else where. See what the bars carry. At least once go to Cancun's LCDH and splurge on a mojito. You won't be disappointed. It's all about moderation. Good suggestion. I will do that!
