Well for starters, they've ranked the Vegas Robainas the lowest of the Cuban cigars. Did anyone notice how quickly the Unicos and Famosos sold out when El Pres put them up on the 24:24 sale yesterday?blink.png

Unless this was because there weren't that many good boxes available...

I have much respect for CA but they are what they are, a panel of guys giving there opinion and we all have opinions. I will be curious to see how the magazine shapes up after the embargo mess is all worked out.

I spend more time mentally editing CA articles than I do reading them. From a NC standpoint, their ratings and opinions seem suspiciously economically (ads) motivated. I can only imagine the CC ratings are similarly influenced.

I have little respect for CA. Cuban cigars, absolutely, do not get a fair shake, because of their being unavailable to most of their readership.

Should they change their name to American Cigar Afficianado then their editorial content would more appropriate and less offensive.

CA is essentially a large format glossy lifestyle magazine whose fundamental editorial direction reflects it's advertising base.

So what else is new??

They smoke one cigar and decide how the marca is ranked? And how is the Monte Open line ranked higher than the other Montes? And why are they ranking the Open line separately anyways?

Cuba does not spend on advertising in CA, yet three Cuban cigars are in top 25jester.gif

CC ratings are not identically influenced by ad purchases, but it remains plausible the ratings are similarly influenced by factors beyond quality and taste.

How transparent would their bias be if there were no token CCs in their lists?

CA. I used to have respect for them. Now, not so much

I guess I don't see the aversion to the ratings. Cuban cigars have the highest average rating, which I figured would make most happy on this forum. And if you look at the advertisements from last year, some of the heaviest advertisers have the lowest average score, ie: Drew Estate, Rocky Patel, and Kristoff were all big advertisers last year and all received less than favorable scores. Could it be possible that the review panels from CA are actually just expressing their own individual opinions and it's not really some huge conspiracy?

No. It's not a huge conspiracy. Just handicapped. Its clear if they have the highest average rating then ask why is there only 3 cc on the list? Just my opinion.

Instead of bashing CA, just take the magazine for what it is.

Now, although it's a pretty poor way of listing cigar reviews it is an average, and if you forget the 1 and only cigar from Mexico, then on average the CC are coming out with the highest rating. Once the US is more open to CC there will be many more of them on the list and maybe the averages get even higher.

Yes the magazine is NC biased but so what.

The prices for the CC are based on UK retail generally, where taxes are astronomical, the prices would be similar if not higher in Australia.

The could possible make a killing producing a magazine target solely at CC smokers.

Try to find the three Cuban cigars, rated highest and you will change your mind - just a thought

BTW, the taste is subjective, but the absence of it is definitely objective

I take their rankings for what they are: opinion. Worth no more or no less than mine or yours.

I smoke Cuban cigars 99.9% of the time. 90% of the time current shipments and multiples of the same cigar from different boxes.

But my taste/opinion is of course subject to my palate which is unique...as is yours.

The opinions I follow most are those that have similar experiences on the same cigar/s to myself. Ryan comes to mind (Bartolomeo), as we share very similar tasting experiences. I take particular note of his daily smoke or comments (and about two dozen other members).

I'm of the same thought process. I get CA each year and enjoy the magazine for what it is, an embodiment of the pastime that we all enjoy nothing more. I also agree that their ratings are favorable to the NC category but what can you do? Nothing I presume. Either way, I trust Rob when it comes to CC's and that is why I am here.

Cheers,

Seth

In other words we don't always agree, but respect others opinions!
