I have this 50 cab of HUP Mag 46 that I deplore. When I smoke them without drinking alcohol, the cigar is actually forgivable. In fact, I think I like it at times and reminds me of why I love the H. Upmann Marca.

Do you think that alcohol plays a part in how much you enjoy the cigar you are smoking? If not alcohol, do you think a pairing of any sort really adds or subtracts to the nuances and enjoyment of your cigar? I If so, do you consciously think, "I'm going to drink this with this cigar?"

I agree, I had a cigar last night without coffee because it was so late....not the same, even though I greatly enjoyed the cigar. That's just my taste preference I suppose. Sometimes I pair with alcohol, depends on the cigar and time of day.

The go to brew for me is the Innis & Gunn original or rum finish, based in Edinburgh, Scotland. A beer that is age in oak casks for several weeks (77 days) the beer was originally developed as a way of flavouring the barrels used by distiller William Grant for its ale cask reserve whisky. The original plan was for the beer to be discarded after it had flavoured the barrel, but the brewers noted that the process had an agreeable effect on the beer, and thus aging the beer became an end in itself. This easily pairs great with any cigar that is graced with habanos lineage, a definite must try !

100% Different drinks will bring different notes out in the cigar and vice versa... It's actually amazing to see, going from one drink to another, with the same cigar how much it actually changes... Check out www.Nicepair.ca... They specialize in drink and cigar pairings!

I mean I love pairing pretty much any cigar with bourbon but I am fairly certain that drinking alcohol while smoking will dampen some of your ability to taste and pick out nuance. If I'm trying a new cigar (which I'm doing a lot of right now) I try to pair with water so I can taste as much as possible.

And the wrong pairing can absolutely murder the experience for me. I love big peaty scotches and tried to pair with cigars but outside of the rare NC powerhouse (one that worked was a Liga T52 I had with Laphroiag QC) the drink tended to overpower my palate and the cigar tasted like peat or it tasted just bad to me.

I also really like pairing with soda. Dr. Pepper or cane sugar Coca Cola are my weapons of choice. The sweetness can usually pair up with just about any flavor profile and I find the carbonation can act as a palate cleanser between puffs.

I recently noticed that pairing my NC with Pepsi/Coke actually tasted terrible. Imo, NCs (which i have) pair better with coffee.
